One Goal is Enough

AZUSA, Calif. – Back into the win column.

After a pair of frustrating results, Azusa Pacific posted a 1-0 win on Thursday evening against Dominican. The victory wrapped up an eight-day, four-game stretch to start PacWest play.

The win is the fifth shutout of the season for the Cougars as they moved their record to 4-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in league games. After winning their conference opener the Cougars played a pair of overtime games where they lost one a knotted the other.

Post Game Interview with head coach Jason Surrell

Allyn Brown scored her first goal of the season when she worked some foot work magic with the ball at the top of the box. Brown blast from 18 yards came after a pass from Mikaela Truckey in the 24th minute.

The Cougars nearly doubled their lead in the second minute of the final half. Kelsey Bushman connected on a header off a corner kick that was cleared by a Dominican defender right at the goal line.

Dominican worked the ball around for a shot on goal in the 73rd minute but the shot at the top of the box from Ivy Torres was corralled by Cougar goal keeper Sarah Klinkenberg. It was just their second shot on frame in the contest.

Azusa Pacific pressed well for a majority of the second half as they sent a handful of set pieces into the box but to no avail. Lindsey Ryals nearly made it 2-0 when she blasted a free kick from 40 yards out that clanged off the post in the final minutes.

On the scoresheet the Cougars posted an 11-4 edge in total shots while taking five corner kicks compared to two from Dominican.

For the second straight game Klinkinberg recorded a shutout.
