IRVINE, Calif. – After jostling for position most of the game, all the action on the scoreboard came late.
In a crucial early season match-up between two of the PacWest's top teams Concordia got a golden goal winner in the second overtime to post a 2-1 victory.
For teams known for their strong defensive prowess, the lack of scoring until the game's later stages was no surprise on a warm southern California day.
Each team had opportunities inside the box during the first half. Concordia sent a handful of balls into the box during set piece chances but couldn't break the Azusa Pacific (3-3-1, 1-1 PacWest) stalwart. Similarly for the Cougars, they put pressure along the Concordia backlines but their shots on goal were denied.

McKenna Carrillo scored the contest's first goal in the 83rd minute. The sophomore drove the ball towards the goal from an odd angle from the right side that curled past Cougar goal keeper Zoey Bauman.
The equalizer came from the foot of Haley Williamson in the 86th minute. The senior controlled a loose ball after a corner kick and directed it to the upper half from approximately 30 yards out. It was just the third goal Concordia (5-0-1, 1-0) allowed all season.
Kennedy Christie in the 89th minute had an opportunity when Concordia goal keeper Jazmin Alvarez misplayed a ball and left the net open. Christie tough angle shot looked to be headed for a goal but an Eagle defender cleared the ball away.
After neither team was able to generate a quality opportunity in the first extra session. Morgan Serres sent the game-winner into the goal from 35 yards out. Her shot from the left side dipped just beneath the cross bar and just past Bauman's outstretch hands.
A tough stretch for the Cougars continues on Tuesday when they travel to rival California Baptist for a mid-afternoon contest.
