SAN DIEGO – It is a season opener to forget.
Little went right for Azusa Pacific as they fell to UC San Diego 5-0 on Thursday to open the 2016 campaign.
The home team set the tone less than a minute into the contest as Katie O'Laughlin scored in the opening minute. Less than 15 minutes later she added her second net finder to give the Tritons a two-goal edge.
From that point forward, Azusa Pacific was able to stop the bleeding for a majority of the game but couldn't find the back of the cage despite putting six shots on frame. During the second half the Cougars put a handful of shots on net but UC San Diego's Itzel Gonzalez made five saves.
UC San Diego scored their final three goals during a five minute stretch in contest's final moments as they scored in the 85th, 86th and 89th minutes respectively.
Statistically, the game wasn't a different as the final score would indicate. UC San Diego held a 14-11 edge in total shots while the Cougars created four corner kicks to the home team's three.
Azusa Pacific begins the home portion of their schedule on Saturday when they host Chico State at 7 p.m.
