Lancers Halt Winning Streak

AZUSA, Calif. – The late season charge fell just short.

Heading into Monday's doubleheader against PacWest leader California Baptist, the Cougars needed to sweep the games for their 11th and 12th wins in-a-row to secure the league title and a berth into the NCAA postseason. However, California Baptist took both games on Monday and, in the process, won the PacWest title.

Azusa Pacific closes the season with a 30-20 overall record with a 25-11 mark in league games.

Game One – California Baptist 6, Azusa Pacific 5

Despite scoring the game's first runs the Cougars couldn't hold the lead and then fell short on a late rally. The loss ended the Cougars 10-game winning streak, the longest since the 2012 season for the program.

Neither team was able to cross the plate in the early innings. Despite producing seven hits in the first five frames, California Baptist was held scoreless by stingy defense and effective pitching from Cougar starter Joe Huthsing. During that same period, the Cougars had three base knocks.

Azusa Pacific broke the deadlock in the fifth stanza. After Lancer starting pitcher Jeremy McDonald retired the first two batters, Michael Franco reached base on an infield error. Cam Bennett followed with a double down the rightfield line. Mychael Goudreau then drove them both home with a single to rightfield for the contest's initial runs.

Antonio Chavarria led off the sixth inning with a homerun onto Alosta Avenue for the Lancers first run. The Lancers were able to get around a double play to score two more runs. The visitors took a 3-2 lead on Andrew Montoya and Bryce Macy RBI base knocks. The Cougars were able to knot the score in their next offensive opportunity as Pablo O'Connor, who started the inning with a double, scored on an RBI groundout from Justin Gomez.

The seventh inning was the key frame for the Lancers as they pieced together three runs on two hits and an Azusa Pacific error. Stephen Lohr scored the go-ahead run on an error by Jonny Reid. Ryan Williams scored the Lancers fifth run on a wild pitch before the scoring came to a close via a Jake Gallaway RBI base knock.

Down 6-3, the Cougars put a rally together in the eighth inning. Adrian Tovalin greeted reliever Patrick Gonzales with a solo homerun then O'Connor tallied a single. After the back-to-back hits, the Lancers went to their regular closer Brody Robinson. After he recorded an out, Robinson then walked Justin Gomez on four pitches. California Baptist then went to Tyson Miller. Miller gave-up an RBI base knock to Steven Garrett but then induced an inning ending double play as the visitors took a one-run lead into the final frame.

After Billy Sandford retired the Lancers in order in the ninth the Cougars started their portion of the frame with a single from Michael Franco. However, Bennett popped up an attempted sacrifice bunt then Miller got another inning double play to seal the Lancer win.

Game Two – California Baptist 9, Azusa Pacific 6

Just as in the first game, Azusa Pacific scored the first two runs of the game in the second frame. Cam Bennett hit an infield single that allowed Steven Garrett to scamper home. Moments later Rene Reyes scored on a wild pitch for the early 2-0 lead.

California Baptist tied the score in the fourth inning when John Taurinsky hit a two-out, two-run homerun into rightfield. Using the long ball in their favor, the Cougars took a 4-2 lead when Michael Franco crushed his second homerun of the season with a two-run shot in the fourth inning.

The big fly theme continued when California Baptist took their first lead of the game in the fifth inning when Antonio Chavarria smoked a three-run homerun. Earlier in the inning A.J. David had an RBI single as the visitors went ahead 6-4.

With a Reyes sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, the Cougars cut their deficit down to 6-5 as Justin Gomez scurried home. To end the inning, Azusa Pacific put a runner on second base with two outs but could not be driven home. In the final frame, Chavarria hit his second three-run homerun of the game to give the visitors a 9-5 cushion.

Azusa Pacific couldn't mount a threat as the season came to a close.
