Minor League Report

AZUSA, Calif. â€" While two former Cougar baseball players are getting a majority of attention in the major leagues, three recent Azusa Pacific draftee are cutting their teeth at the minor league level of professional baseball.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) and Stephen Vogt (Oakland Athletics) are both playing in the big leagues, while Joseph Daris, Adam McCreery and Zach Hedges were all drafted in the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft.

Daris, drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 14th round, is currently with the Rome Braves at the single A level. The centerfielder is batting .275 with 3 doubles, 6 triples, 17 RBI along with eight stolen bases. Daris (MiLB Player Page). was named the Offensive Player of the Week in the South Atlantic League for the week ending May 24th. During a May 23 game against the Savannah Sandgnats, the centerfielder raced around the bases and scored a drive to centerfield that was ruled a triple but could have been a rule an inside-the-park grand slam (Video).

McCreery, a left-hander drafted by the Angles in the 22nd round, posted a 1-1 record with a 4.58 ERA in the Arizona Fall League in 2014. He held opposing hitters to just a .179 average against (MiLB Player Page).

Zach Hedges is currently with the South Bend Cubs in the Single A Midwest league. The Chicago Cubs drafted him in the 26th round. Hedges posted a successful campaign in the Arizona Fall League posting a 1.37 ERA while allowing just three earned runs in 19.2 innings pitched. In the 2015 season, Hedges (MiLB Player Page). has started eight games earning a 2-4 record with a 4.58 ERA.
