Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Both of Azusa Pacific's first two games of the 2016 Desert Stinger Classic were decided in the late innings, as Kayla Jimenez delivered a walk-off two-run double in a 6-5 win over University of Mary (N.D.) before the Cougars dropped a 4-3 decision to Northwest Nazarene Friday afternoon at Majestic Park in Las Vegas.
Azusa Pacific trailed by three runs heading into the bottom of the sixth inning beforeAnneliese Davis trimmed the margin to 5-3 with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly. In the seventh, junior third baseman Nicki Sprague pulled the Cougars within one with an RBI double, andMadison Hernandez drew a walk to load the bases and bring Jimenez to the plate for the game-winning hit.
Junior centerfielder Abry Moreno hit a run-scoring two-out double and came around to score on an error in the fourth inning as Azusa Pacific answered U-Mary's three-run first inning. The Marauders added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead to 5-2.
Leadoff hitter Illiana Jimenez went three-for-four in the game, and she was Azusa Pacific's only player with multiple hits in the contest. Junior pitcher Ariana von Zboray picked up the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
In the loss to Northwest Nazarene, Azusa Pacific took the early lead with single runs in the first and second, but NNU tied the game in the third inning with single runs in the second and third frames. Moreno scored Janelle Eccles from third on a sixth-inning fielder's choice, but Northwest Nazarene moved ahead, 4-3, with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cougars got their leadoff hitter on base in the seventh inning with Cayla Broussard's leadoff single, but the middle of Azusa Pacific's lineup hit into three straight groundouts to end the game with the potential tying run in scoring position.
The Cougars take on three more opponents Saturday at the Desert Stinger Tournament, starting with an 11:30 a.m. matchup against Minot State.
