HONOLULU, Hawai'i -- Joey Schreiber's fifth three-pointer of the game was his most important, keeping Azusa Pacific's fading Pacific West Conference regular-season title hopes alive and well after his clutch game-winning corner three with 5.6 seconds left lifted the Cougars to a wild 100-99 overtime road win over Chaminade Thursday night.

Schreiber scored six of Azusa Pacific's 12 points in overtime and finished with a team-high 17 points to secure a win the Cougars believed they had wrapped up with a defensive stop in the closing seconds of regulation. Sophomore forward Petar Kutlesic protected an 87-86 lead by cleaning up the defensive rebound after Sam Daly missed the potential go-ahead jumper. However, after Kutlesic was fouled with 1.5 seconds left, he punctuated his celebration of the game-winning defensive stand by inadvertently slamming the ball into the ground.

The momentary outburst resulted in a technical foul and two free throws for Chaminade's Kiran Shastri, who sank them both to give the Silverswords an 88-87 lead before Kutlesic stepped to the line for his foul shots at the other end. After Kutlesic sank the first to tie the game at 88-88, his second was off the mark, sending the game to overtime.

The wild turn of events at the end of regulation capped a furious Chaminade rally from six points down in the final minute. Kutlesic knocked down a pair of free throws with 57 seconds left to give the Cougars an 87-81 lead, but Kuany Kuany answered with a pair of free throws when he was fouled in the act of shooting to trim the margin to four points, 87-83, with 54 seconds left. A quick Azusa Pacific turnover led to an Oscar Pedroso three-pointer with 49 seconds to play, pulling Chaminade within a point at 87-86. Connor Peterson missed a layup with the shot clock winding down to set up the Silverswords with the potential game-winning opportunity in the closing seconds.

The victory sends Azusa Pacific into the final game of the regular season with a chance to win the Pacific West Conference regular-season title and secure the top seed in next week's PacWest Championship Tournament. The Cougars, who improved to 20-7 overall and 14-5 in the PacWest, sit one game behind current PacWest leader Concordia (15-4 PacWest), which wraps up the season with a challenging visit to Dixie State, which also sits a game back at 14-5 in conference play.

"The reality of this team is that it's a young group, and with that there are ups and downs and an ebb-and-flow in every game," Azusa Pacific head coach Justin Leslie said. "When you go on the road, you have to create your own opportunities with hustle plays, and tonight we did that. Our loss Tuesday night was really tough to swallow. I told the team tonight that I didn't care what the final score was tonight, as long as we played with passion, with guns blazing, and with every bit of energy and effort we could muster up."

Schreiber and Peterson shared the team scoring lead with 17 points each, with Schreiber hitting five-of-nine three-pointers to lead Azusa Pacific to a 47 percent (14-for-30) clip from long range. Four others were in double figures for the Cougars, including Kutlesic and his 15-point, 13-rebound double-double. Senior guard Bruce English hit four-of-five three-pointers in a 15-point effort, while senior guard LyDell Cardwell scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half to help the Cougars to a 48-46 halftime edge. Sophomore forward Austin Dyer added 10 points off the bench.

"This was a game where the depth of our team was needed for this win," Leslie said. "This was one of those games where we complemented each other just enough, and a lot of different guys had to make plays at both ends of the floor."

Chaminade was led by Kuany Kuany, who scored a game-high 25 points before fouling out in the final minute of overtime. Shastri scored 21 points, including the go-ahead free throws late in regulation, and Rohndell Goodwin added 15 points for Chaminade, which fell to 11-15 overall and 9-10 in PacWest play. The Silverswords are one of four teams tied for the sixth and final spot in next week's PacWest Tournament.

Azusa Pacific wraps up a three-game week in Hawai'i with a Saturday night visit to the Big Island to take on Hawai'i Hilo, which is also part of that four-way tie with Chaminade, Dominican, and Fresno Pacific for the final PacWest Tournament berth.

"This game was a must-win just to give ourselves a chance to have something to play for on Saturday, and now we're going to do everything we possibly can to prepare for Hawai'i Hilo," Leslie said. "We're not familiar with each other, so hopefully we prepare ourselves the best we possibly can the next 48 hours to identify some opportunities to catch them with some things. There's a door open in front of us, and collectively we need to get through it. We control our destiny to be the number one seed in the PacWest tournament, and coming off a trip like this, an extra day of rest would be very helpful."

Azusa Pacific posted a 46-37 rebounding edge and shot 53 percent (36-for-68) from the field, while Chaminade shot 46 percent (36-for-79) overall and 33 percent (10-for-30) from three-point range. The Silverswords stayed in the game by committing only seven turnovers while forcing 19 out of the Cougars, setting up a 31-9 margin in points off turnovers.
