Senior Salute

AZUSA, Calif. – It was a night of celebration.

The Cougars recognized eight student-athletes as they dismantled Concordia 103-44 on Friday evening for their 10th straight win.

With the win the Cougars have put themselves in great position to win at least a share of the PacWest regular season title and No. 1 seed for the league's postseason tournament. Although they still have three games left in Hawaii, Azusa Pacific controls its own destiny for at least a share of the title.

The game marks the end of an era for eight players as Elena Ala, Lauren Gilster, Allison Greene, Kelly Hardeman, Cydnie Jones, Sam Soria, Kassandra Tayag and Miriam Zabinsky played their final regular season game at the Felix Event Center. Azusa Pacific ends the season with a 13-1 record at home. The outgoing players scored 93 of the team's points on Friday.

"Tonight was just perfect. I'm not sure it could have gone any better," said head coach T.J Hardeman. "I'm really happy our seniors were able to go out on such an incredible performance."

The win is a school record for margin of victory against a PacWest opponent. The 100-plus team points gave the Cougars (22-3, 16-1 PacWest) the century mark for the second time this season after not hitting that mark for the previous five.

The Cougars had three players score at least 20 points led by a pair of seniors. Kelly Hardeman scored 25 points in her home finale. She hit seven three-pointers which was one shy of the school record. In her final game inside the Felix Event Center Miriam Zabinsky scored 22 points. Joelle Tampien scored a career high 21 points off the bench. The sophomore missed just one of her 10 field goals including nailing five three-pointers.

Not to be outdone was Cydnie Jones who tallied her fourth double-double of the season with a 16-point, 12-rebound effort.

As a team Azusa Pacific nailed 16 shots from behind the arc which was also one short of the school record.

Azusa Pacific used a scoring run that stretched out over two quarters to all but seal the victory. Down 16-14 with just over three minutes left in the first quarter, Azusa Pacific exploded. The Cougars went on a 44-5 scoring run and never looked back. The home team took a 58-21 lead into the locker room and the win was never in question.

During that opening half the Cougars were nearly indefensible from behind the arc as they hit 11 three-pointers. Hardeman nailed four while Jones and Joelle Tampien had three apiece. Also during the opening 20 minutes, Azusa Pacific forced Concordia (2-22, 1-18) into 19 turnovers which helped them to a 24-6 edge in points off turnovers.

Azusa Pacific closed out the regular season with three games in Hawaii beginning on Tuesday against Chaminade. Should the Cougars win that game they would tie a school record for consecutive wins in conference play with 11. It was previously done in 2001 and 2011.
