Title Within Reach

LAIE, Hawaii – Heading to the finish line, Azusa Pacific is looking strong.

The Cougars started their final week of the regular season with an 88-66 win at BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday evening.

The win is the 11th straight for the Cougars which ties the school record for consecutive wins in conference games. Previously the mark was set during the 2001 and 2011 seasons when the squad played in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

With two games left in the season, Azusa Pacific is tied with California Baptist for the lead in the PacWest. Both teams are sporting a 17-1 league mark with two games left for each team. The Cougars continue their Hawaii trip with games at Chaminade and Hawaii Hilo on Thursday and Saturday respectively. Overall the 17th ranked Cougars are 23-3 which is the most wins for the program in four seasons when the 2011-12 team won 26.

It was a tale of two halves for the Cougar leading scorers. Maggie Dumphy connected on 7-of-8 field goals attempts in the first half for a 14-point opening 20 minutes en route to her 17 points. After a three-point effort in the initial half, Kelly Hardeman exploded for 20 in the final half.

Joelle Tampien had another strong effort off the bench by nailing four shots from behind the arc as she scored 14 points. Cydnie Jones and Miriam Zabinksky each nothed 12-point evenings.

Azusa Pacific harass the Seasiders into 26 turnovers which they turned into an 18-7 edge in points off turnovers. The team work was also evident on the offensive side of the ball as 24 of the squad's 34 made fields came from an assist. Allison Greene, Zabinsky and Jones each had five assists.

Despite trailing by two after the first quarter, the Cougars used a run in the second period to take control. Holding a 28-27 lead, Azusa Pacific proceeded to score 11 of the next 13 points as they took their first double figure lead of the evening. A just before the buzzer three-pointer by Cydnie Jones help the Cougars momentum as they took a 42-34 lead into the locker room.

The home team kept the game close during the early minutes of the third quarter but couldn't keep the high octane Cougars down. Azusa Pacific took a 51-42 with 4:42 left in the period and turned that into a 64-45 advantage by the end of the quarter. During the final quarter, BYU-Hawaii (11-13, 8-11) never closed their deficit beyond 20 points.
