Box Score AZUSA, Calif. -- The rest of the Pacific West Conference may not have figured out how to beat first-year member Concordia, but Azusa Pacific has the formula down to a science, as the Cougars seized control of the PacWest regular-season title race with an 83-74 win that clinched a series sweep over the Eagles Friday night at the Felix Event Center.
The victory kept five teams alive for the conference regular-season title, although Azusa Pacific is the only one which controls its own destiny heading into the final week of the regular season. The Cougars are now 19-6 overall and 13-4 in the PacWest, and Concordia is the only other team with fewer than five conference losses as the Eagles dropped to 22-5 overall and 15-4 in the PacWest. Concordia's only game next week is a Feb. 27 visit to Dixie State, while Azusa Pacific has a three-game week in Hawai'i, starting with a Tuesday, Feb. 23 visit to BYU-Hawaii.
Sophomore forward Corey Langerveld scored a team-high 19 points, and he gave Azusa Pacific the lead for good late in the first half with a three-pointer which sparked a 13-4 run to close out the first half and give the Cougars a 39-32 edge at the break. Langerveld was a perfect three-for-three from three-point range, hitting all three from distance in the first half.
"Corey had a great week of practice, and he picked his spots well to get open," Azusa Pacific head coach Justin Leslie said. "You have to be poised and able to attack with the ball in your hands against Concordia, but you also have to be great at creating angles away from the ball against them. That's where they're so good at getting teams sped up and leaving no options but a hurried shot, so when those guys got sped up or drove, Corey was sitting there wide open to take advantage for some open looks from three. That allowed him to attack off the drive when they were closing out and take advantage of all those options."
Langerveld, who led all first-half scorers with 13 points, scored his other six during a 14-4 run to open the second half, as the Cougars took their largest lead of the game at 53-36 with 13:22 left. Langerveld scored the first of 10 straight points during that run, part of a stretch during which the Azusa Pacific defense held Concordia scoreless for over five minutes.
However, Concordia got right back in the game with a 19-5 run, trimming the lead to 58-55 with 8:34 to play before Azusa Pacific pushed the lead back into double digits with a 16-3 run that resulted in a 16-point margin, 77-61, with 1:34 to play. JT Roach knocked down three treys in the final 1:06, the last one cutting the lead to 79-74 with 15 seconds left, freshman point guardConnor Peterson and sophomore forward Petar Kutlesic each knocked down a pair of free throws late to provide the final nine-point cushion.
"The first half went about as textbook as we could have prepared for, but where we've struggled is when a team flips the script," Leslie said. "Concordia had to do some different things in the second half that made us lose our composure a little bit, but at the end of the day, we dug in our heels to defend the home floor. We're a deep team, and we needed everyone to go out there and earn this win tonight."
Peterson finished the game with 12 points and a game-high seven assists, while Kutlesic added 11 points and tied Langerveld as Azusa Pacific's leading rebounder with six. Senior guard LyDell Cardwell gave the Cougars four double-digit scorers, finishing with 10 points. Kutlesic added four blocks, while senior guard Bruce English registered three blocks.
The victory wraps up a set of six consecutive home games for Azusa Pacific, which honored its three seniors (Cardwell, English, Zoller) in a pregame ceremony.
"This program is about guys that come here and invest, and those three have certainly invested themselves in this program," Leslie said. "They've each redshirted a year, and they've each played roles where they've had to give of themselves for the sake of the team. It hasn't always been easy, but they've persevered with amazing character and been great representatives of what this program is about. I'm thankful they were able to have a moment like this with the three of them together on the floor arm in arm. That meant a lot for me, because they worked for this chance and opportunity, and to be able to take advantage of it like they did tonight was special."
Roach led all scorers with 26 points, hitting six-of-eight three-pointers, while Justin Davis came off the bench to add 18 points. Stephen Grosey, Concordia's second-leading scorer, left the game with an injury early in the first half after he scored his only two points on a breakaway dunk that gave Concordia an early 12-7 lead.
