AZUSA, Calif. – Significant milestones continue to pile up for the Cougars.
Azusa Pacific knocked off a scrappy Dominican team in the penultimate home game on Monday evening 79-65.
With the victory the Cougars secure their ninth straight win which is the longest streak for the program since the 2011-12 season.
The win also gives head coach T.J. Hardeman his 250th career win. In his ninth season with the Cougars he has won 212 games. Prior to his current stint, he spent three seasons at the helm with Hope International.
"You know I wouldn't have gotten to this number if I wasn't at Azusa Pacific," Hardeman said. "This place is conducive to winning. We are able to get the caliber of player it takes to win on a regular basis."
Maggie Dumphy recorded her second double-double of the season with a 14-point, 10-rebound effort. In 28 minutes she hit six of her eight field goal attempts while also dishing out three assists. Fresh off of being named the PacWest Defender of the Week, she blocked three shots and also recorded three steals.
Miriam Zabinsky scored a game high 19 points and also recorded four steals in 34 minutes. Cydnie Jones just missed her second straight double-double by scoring 17 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Joelle Tampien came off the bench to score 16 points.
The Cougars converted on 25 of their 30 trips to the foul line to aid in the victory. The 25 made shots from the charity stripe represent the second most the squad has made in a game this season. Azusa Pacific's defense was also solid as they forced 25 Dominican turnovers which led to a 29-7 edge in points off turnovers.
"They held our top scorer tonight to just two points but the talent that this team had really showed tonight," Hardeman said. "We don't talk much about foul shooting but we have just gotten better as the season has gone along. I'm really proud of how Allison Greene and Miriam Zabinsky defended their top scorer. It really was a great defensive effort all around for us tonight."
After a tightly played first quarter were the largest lead either team had was six points, Azusa Pacific (21-3, 15-1 PacWest) looked to get some separation in the second quarter. Leading 21-15, the Cougars started the stanza on a 9-3 scoring spurt to push their lead to 30-17 with just under five minutes left until halftime. A pesky Penguins (15-9, 11-6) squad go their deficit down to five points before the home team took a 34-27 lead into the locker room.
Dominican battled away but they couldn't pull any closer than three points in the third quarter as the Cougars took a 52-44 lead into the final 10 minutes. A Tampien four-point play to start the quarter set the tone for the Cougars. Azusa Pacific scored the first 11 points as they took a commanding 19-point lead the Penguins couldn't overcome.
Azusa Pacific's home slate comes to a close on Friday evening when they host Concordia. Prior to the game the program will honor its seven players who are concluding their home careers.
