AZUSA, Calif. – Cal State Monterey Bay took a pair of games from the Cougars on Friday evening in an early season west region match-up.
The Sea Otters have won the first three games of the four-game set with the final game being played tomorrow at Noon.
Game One – Cal State Monterey Bay 14, Azusa Pacific 3
The Sea Otters offense was on point while their hurlers were just as effective.
The visitors knocked around seven different Cougar pitchers for 16 hits led by Jeffrey Amaral's four-hit game. Chris Blanton and Brian Bostjancic each contributed two hits to the cause.
On the mound five pitchers for the Sea Otters allowed just four hits while striking out seven.
Cal State Monterey Bay started from where they left off during the first game of the series on Thursday night. The Sea Otters scored four runs before Azusa Pacific recorded an out in the opening inning. Highlighting the outburst was a three-run homerun Justin Flores three-run fence clearer.
The Sea Otters all but put the game out of reach in the fifth. The visitors made three different Cougar pitches threw 55 pitches as Cal State Monterey Bay scored five runs and sent 11 batters to the plate. Myles Hager hit a three-run opposite field homerun to aid in the scoring outburst.
The final runs for the Sea Otters came in the eighth inning as they put a five-spot on the scoreboard.
All of Azusa Pacific's runs came during their final at-bats.
Game Two – Cal State Monterey 3, Azusa Pacific 2
The Sea Otters offense continued its momentum as they had two batters cross the plate during their initial go round. The Cougars responded in their half of the frame when Adrian Tovalin hit a towering homerun over the leftfield wall for a two-run homerun.
Cal State Monterey Bay retook their lead with a solo home in the fourth inning by Myles Hagar. The second baseman took a 1-2 offering from Azusa Pacific starting pitcher Joe Huthing over the leftfield wall.
A host of Sea Otter relievers were able to keep the Cougars off balance. The home team was held hitless between the second and fifth innings. Mitch Dergazarian started the sixth frame with a single up the middle then stole second base. He reach third base with just one out but the Cougars couldn't drive the tying run home.
In the final stanza, the Cougars couldn't get the tying run on base as Kyle Narahara earned the save.
Not to go unnoticed in the setback was to duo of Billy Sanford and Dillon Miyashiro who pitched the final 3.2 innings without allowing a hit while striking out seven.
