Early Season Struggles Continue

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- California Baptist continued its impressive unbeaten start to the 2016-17 season with a 91-60 victory over Azusa Pacific, which was held to a season scoring low in its first opportunity to see the No. 5-ranked Lancers in person this season.

The Cougars shot just 38 percent (21-for-55) from the field, including a 16 percent (3-for-19) clip from three-point range, and California Baptist took advantage by racing to a 50-26 halftime edge before cruising to the win.

Senior forward Joey Schreiber led Azusa Pacific scorers with 12 points, and Petar Kutlesic added 11 points with Corey Langerveld contributing 10.

California Baptist was led by game-highs of 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists from Michael Smith, who led his team to a 38-24 rebounding edge over the Cougars. He was also three-for-six on three-pointers, helping the Lancers shoot 58 percent (14-for-24) from three-point range in the win.

The Lancers, who finished with five players in double figures, jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, then went on a 20-5 run over the final five minutes of the first half to take a commanding 50-26 halftime lead. CBU also scored 25 of the first 34 points in the second half, extending its 24-point margin into a 40-point lead midway through the second half.

With the loss, Azusa Pacific dropped to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in PacWest play, while California Baptist improved to 8-0 overall, 2-0 PacWest. The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Dec. 10, hosting Dixie State in its PacWest home opener.
