Cougars Build Momentum Into Break

AZUSA, Calif. -- Five players reached double figures in scoring, led by Austin Dyer's 19-point effort, as Azusa Pacific posted a 93-70 victory over Holy Names to take a three-game winning streak into Christmas break.

After surpassing the 75-point mark twice in its first 11 games, the Cougars have averaged exactly 93 points during the three-game winning streak. Azusa Pacific will resume Pacific West Conference action after the break, taking a 7-7 overall record (2-2 PacWest) into a three-game road trip to Hawai'i the first week of January.

"This team is really learning how to win," Azusa Pacific head coach Justin Leslie said. "We had to come from behind to beat Dixie State, and we had to maintain a lead in a close game against Western Oregon last week before getting a big lead and keeping it tonight against Holy Names. All three of those are beneficial for us to experience and start building on."

Dyer's 19 points were a season-high, and Corey Langerveld added 18 points while Petar Kutlesic followed consecutive 30-point outings with a solid 15-point, 9-rebound contribution. Ben Taufahema and Will Ferris registered 10 points each off the bench as the Cougars led by as many as 27 points.

"Everybody on the floor needs to be a threat for us; they're all good basketball players who should play with the confidence to take the opportunities that are given to them," Leslie said. "Austin was fantastic and finished at a high rate, and they're starting to show that everybody can be a threat on the floor and be a factor in different ways in the game. They all have opportunities to make an impact in the game, and they need to own those opportunities. Seeing them gain confidence in the roles they're given has been really exciting to watch as they learn and grow."

Dyer had 13 points in the first half alone, scoring seven in a 22-8 run over the final 6:15 of the first half to take a 48-30 halftime lead. Joey Schreiber opened the second half with a quick three-pointer as the Cougars scored 12 of the first 17 points in the second half to expand the lead to 60-35 with 16:11 remaining.

"Wins always feel great, but the last few weeks have been really hard," Leslie said. "Our players have been challenged on a daily basis, and they've really responded. It hasn't been easy, but we've grown a lot these last few weeks as evidenced by the last few games."

Holy Names' top scorer was Jason Webster, who tallied 11 points, but the Hawks were held to 36 percent shooting (24-for-67) while Azusa Pacific also posted a 51-39 edge in rebounds.
