Little Things Add Up To Big Win

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific had no 20-point scorer and no double-double performance, but a balanced, energetic effort led the Cougars to a 26-point halftime lead and an eventual 77-62 win over Cal State L.A. to wrap up the two-day Cougar Classic Saturday night.

Corey Langerveld led the scoring effort with a game-high 18 points, while Joey Schreiber added 16 points, but a relentless first-half defensive performance allowed Azusa Pacific to coast to the 15-point win over the Golden Eagles. The Cougars held Cal State L.A. to a first-half shooting percentage of 27 percent (8-for-30) to take a 45-19 halftime edge.

"What we had out there today was refreshing, to see the team have fun and beat a really good basketball team," Azusa Pacific head coach Justin Leslie said. "We played a marvelous first half, and you might only get a few halves like that in a season. Cal State L.A. is a tough team, and they kept competing, but we built such a cushion that we were able to weather the storm."

Azusa Pacific made 11-of-24 three-pointers (46 percent) and shot 49 percent (28-for-57) overall, while Cal State L.A. finished at 31 percent (21-for-67), including an 8-for-36 (22 percent) clip on three-pointers. Langerveld hit 7-of-10 from the field (4-of-6 three-pointers), and Schreiber's 16-point effort included three treys. Petar Kutlesic pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, while Connor Peterson dished out a game-high eight assists. Kutlesic and Peterson added seven points each, and Ryan O'Connell added nine points off the Cougar bench.

In the first 20 minutes, Azusa Pacific posted a 16-5 edge in points off turnovers, starting with a Peterson three-pointer with 14:06 left in the first half. Peterson's three sparked a 10-0 run over the next four minutes, part of a 36-12 scoring outburst over the rest of the half. The Cougars answered a pair of Cal State L.A. three-pointers with another 12-0 burst, with Langerveld scoring the eight consecutive points to extend the lead to 31-13.

Cal State L.A. scored on back-to-back possessions, trimming the margin to 31-17 with just over five minutes left in the half, but the Cougars finished the half on another 14-2 run, highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers from Ben Taufahema.

The closest Cal State L.A. got until the final minute of the game was a 16-point margin, after the Golden Eagles posted a 10-2 run early in the second half to cut Azusa Pacific's lead to 54-38 with 14:34 to play. Just eleven seconds later, Langerveld buried another three-pointer, sparking a 10-3 run which matched the Cougars' largest lead of the game, 67-41, with 10:21 to play.

"The credit for this win was the collective energy of the team," Leslie said. "It wasn't always pretty, but we played hard and we played together, and that's our recipe for success. We displayed some elements of toughness every time they started making a run, and those things were good for us in the middle of the second half."

Cal State L.A.'s leading scorer was Roderick Evans-Taylor (14 points), while Travis Hammonds and Garrett Carter both reached double figures with 11 points each.

Azusa Pacific turns its attention to the 20-game Pacific West Conference schedule, which kicks off next week with two challenging road tests. The Cougars visit Concordia on Thursday, Dec. 1, which is followed just two days later with a visit to preseason PacWest favorite California Baptist on Saturday, Dec. 3.
