HONOLULU, Hawaii – Moments away from sheer frustration, the Cougars salvaged a tie from near defeat on rain slicked turf field on Saturday afternoon.
Azusa Pacific scored late in regulation en route to a 1-1 draw against Chaminade to close out their four-game swing through Hawaii.
Throughout the game Azusa Pacific played with possession but needed late heroics to move their record to 6-6-4 overall and 6-4-2 in PacWest games. The four ties is the most for an Azusa Pacific squad since the 2002 season when they recorded five. The game also marked the third straight double-overtime game for the Cougars.Â
Post Game Comments from head coach Dave Blomquist
During that opening half the Cougars posted the upper hand in overall shots (7-5) as well as corner kicks (5-3) but couldn't cash-in on those statistical edges. Yoshinori Tamukai gave the home team a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. The junior took a feed from the left side for the half's only goal and the lone shot on goal for either team in the stanza.
For most of the second half the Azusa Pacific offense continued to press into their upper third but couldn't create that opportunity which led to a goal until some late-game drama. With less than two minutes left, Kaleb Armbrust scored his fourth goal of the season. The junior booted a free kick from 30 yards out into the upper ninety. He has three net-finders this year from set pieces.
During the winner-take-all extra time sessions, each squad had a chance for a golden goal. For Chaminade, the game was nearly ended in the 98th minute but Jaewon Huh's shot clipped off the crossbar and was cleared away by the Cougar defense. In the second extra session Azusa Pacific had an opportunity when Chris Brusenback sent a ball from the left side towards the box but the Cougars couldn't control the ball for a shot.
Azusa Pacific held a 23-12 edge in total shots while taking eight corner kicks compared to three from the Silverswords.
The Cougars conclude their 2016 campaign with senior night on Friday evening when they host Point Loma at 7 p.m.
