Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Stephen Hinkel

Ended in Double Overtime

AZUSA, Calif. – A double overtime game to end the season was pretty much appropriate. Unfortunately, the results wasn't what the Cougars were hoping for.

Azusa Pacific played their eighth double overtime game of the season to close out the campaign as Point Loma posted a 2-1 golden goal victory.

The Cougars started the year with four straight double extra session games and end the year with four consecutive double overtime games. No team in the west region played more double overtime games than Azusa Pacific.

Prior to the game the Cougars honored the seven senior players who were playing their final collegiate game.

During the first 10 minutes each team had a quality chance on goal. Point Loma's Nick Tagaloa blasted a shot at the top of the box forcing Cougar goal keeper Tyler Jaramillo into a diving save. Moments later Rene Santos put a good boot from 10 yards out that went right at Point Loma goal keeper Michael Lambert.

With just over seven minutes left in the half, Keyran Kelly made a nice run down the left side of the field and forced Jaramillo into a one-on-one situation. Kelly's shot was altered enough and went harmlessly wide. The final decent change of the frame came in the final seconds when Arturo Astorga blasted a ball just wide of the upper ninety on the right side.

The scoreless trend, but good opportunities, continued into the last 45 minutes of regulation. With just under 25 minutes left in the second frame, Kaleb Armbrust took a free kick from 20 yards out that barely missed high over the cross. Point Loma countered that in the 70th minute when Paul Sweet's blast from the top of the box screamed by high over the cross bar.

In the 71st minute Patrice Glaser scored his second goal of the year on a penalty kick. The foul was drawn in the box when Tagaloa was deemed to be fouled in the box on a header attempt.

Their lead lasted all of two minutes. Dane Johnson scored his second career goal with a strong blast from 30 yards out that tickled the twine.

During the final ticks of regulation the Cougars (6-7-4, 6-5-2 PacWest) took a free kick that was blocked back towards midfield and allowed Point Loma to counter attack. With six seconds left, Eduardo Gallardo had a one-on-one chance but Jaramillo was up to the challenge with a great save to send the game to overtime.

The best chance before the game winner in the extra session came in the second overtime when Gallardo one-touched a ball over the cross bar that would have scored into an open net had he put it on frame. In the 106th minute both teams season came to an end when Gallardo and Tagaloa worked a nice give-and-go for the golden goal for Point Loma (9-5-4, 8-4-1).
