HILO, Hawaii – A little bit of rain was just a little bit of adversity.
Azusa Pacific scored twice in the second half as they posted a fairly wet 3-1 victory against Hawaii Hilo on Saturday evening.
The win is the Cougars sixth in their last seven games as they move to 6-5-2 overall and 6-3 in PacWest games. The triumph is also significant as the resilient squad has overcome a 0-4-2 start to move above .500 for the first time this year. It is the fourth win in four games against the Vulcans; Azusa Pacific holds an 11-3 scoring edge in those four all-time meetings.
Post Game Interview with head coach Dave Blomquist
Tim Ogunniyi scored his team leading seventh goal of the season in the 19th minute to open the scoring. The senior corralled a loose ball in the box after a boot from Callum Wallace's original shot that hit the post.
Azusa Pacific's lead lasted for nearly 12 minutes until the Vulcans (1-12-1, 0-9-1) tied the score. Jonathan Garcia took a feed from Jesus Ortega from 20 yards out and beat Cougar goal keeper Tyler Jaramillo.
Less than 20 minutes into the second frame Azusa Pacific retook the lead as Kaleb Armbrust hit a tough angled ball toward the goal. The junior's boot from the left side was redirected by Ogunniyi and Vulcan goal keeper Joshua Japer had no chance as the ball tickled the twine.
Moments after the Cougars took the lead the sky opened up and a down pour ensued for a good portion of the game's final minutes. Undaunted by the precipitation, Armbrust added his second goal of the season with just over 12 minutes left. His right-footed free-kick from 25 yards out was similar to his first goal of the season two weeks ago from a spot just left of the goal.
Azusa Pacific continues their Hawaii trip with a Monday contest at BYU-Hawaii.
