GLENDORA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific celebrated its 500th game in program history the best way it knew how, rolling up over 500 yards of offense in a 45-13 win over Humboldt State Saturday night at Citrus Stadium.
Junior quarterback Andrew Elffers led the way, throwing for a career-high 303 yards on 18-of-25 passing while adding 50 rushing yards on six carries for the Cougars' balanced offense, which produced 559 yards of total offense and averaged 8.6 yards per offensive play.
Sophomore linebacker Aaron Berry helped the defense join the celebration, sparking a run of 38 consecutive points with a 62-yard return of a fumble recovery for a touchdown that gave Azusa Pacific a 14-6 lead with 5:45 to play in the first quarter. Ten of the next 11 Lumberjack possessions ended in either a punt or turnover on downs as the Cougars built a 45-6 lead before Humboldt State added a late touchdown for the final 45-13 tally.
Azusa Pacific scored on four of six first-half possessions, including a seven-play, 65-yard scoring drive to open the game. Sophomore running back Kurt Scoby punctuated the drive with a 17-yard exclamation point, breaking through a pair of would-be tacklers inside the five to plunge across the goal line for the score. Berry's fumble return made it 14-6, and Scoby followed a second-quarter field goal with a seven-yard touchdown reception from Elffers with 2:05 left in the second quarter to give the Cougars a 24-6 halftime lead.
Aaron Baltazar added a 40-yard scoring run in the third quarter, and Elffers scored on an 18-yard keeper in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 38-6. Chad Jeffries found Weston Carr for a nine-yard touchdown pass with five minutes left to finish off Azusa Pacific's scoring flurry.
Sophomore linebacker Mykal Walker led the defense with a team-high 10 tackles, including a hand in one of three Cougar sacks of Humboldt State quarterback Robert Webber. Berry added nine tackles including his scoop-and-score touchdown, and Taliuaki Suliafu, Robert Bohanna, and Jason Schwartz each registered a sack. Webber finished the game 21-of-41 passing for 245 yards, and Lumberjack running back Ja'Quan Gardner topped 100 yards rushing with 113 yards on 26 carries.
Chris Solomon was Azusa Pacific's leading rusher, carrying six times for 68 yards, while Baltazar added 55 yards on nine carries and Scoby carried seven times for 38 yards. The starting trio of wide receivers (Ethan Zeidler, Carr, and Brandon Jackson) combined for 15 catches for 253 yards, with Zeidler leading the way with six receptions for 96 yards.
WHAT'S NEXT: Azusa Pacific takes on Simon Fraser in the Cougars' final GNAC road game next Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m.. The Cougars return home for back-to-back home games against Central Washington (Oct. 29) and Western Oregon (Nov. 5) to wrap up the conference schedule.
