Defense Dominates The Day

Cougars Tie NCAA Division II Record With Three Interception Return Touchdowns

BURNABY, British Columbia -- Azusa Pacific put together a defensive effort for the ages, scoring four first-half touchdowns on returns from three interceptions and a fumble recovery before the No. 17-ranked Cougars finished off the dominant performance with a 57-0 shutout win over Simon Fraser Saturday afternoon at Swangard Stadium.

Three of those defensive scores occurred in a two-minute, 11-second span late in the second quarter, to help the Cougars to a 28-0 halftime lead, all on defensive scores. A second-half safety meant Azusa Pacific's defense was responsible for 30 points on the day, meaning the Cougar defense itself outscored 81 entire Division II teams on Saturday.

"Scoring on defense is huge for any game, but I'm especially fired up that our defense found a way to score four times and get a safety," Azusa Pacific head coach Victor Santa Cruz said. "I felt confident at halftime with the defense playing well and knowing that our offense was moving the ball. Simon Fraser always plays tough defense, but I knew our offensive staff would make the necessary adjustments for a great second half."

The performance also puts Azusa Pacific into the NCAA Division II record books for tying the division's single-game record for most interceptions returned for touchdown (three). The record is held by many teams but had not occurred since 1998. The shutout was Azusa Pacific's 22nd all-time and its first since posting a 54-0 win over Menlo in 2014. The Cougars improved to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference heading into next week's Homecoming clash with Central Washington, which trails Azusa Pacific by one-and-a-half games in the conference standings and represents the only remaining threat to the Cougars' GNAC title hopes.

"College football is so competitive week in and week out, and our team needs to maintain its week-by-week focus," Santa Cruz said. "It's the only way to prepare and play, and we'll go back to work on Monday to start preparing for another big week."

Jonathan Thropay's 68-yard interception return not only halted Simon Fraser's opening drive of the game, it gave the Cougars an early 7-0 lead to protect. For most of the first half, it appeared that score might hold up into the half, until Tyree Davis picked off a pass and returned it 38 yards for another score with 2:25 left in the second quarter to extend the lead to 14-0.

On the first snap after the ensuing kickoff, a Robert Bohanna sack of Clan quarterback Mihai Lapuste jarred the ball loose for Taliuaki Suliafu to pick it up for a 10-yard fumble return score which made it 21-0 with 2:05 left. With time winding down late in the second quarter, Aaron Berry picked off Miles Richardson at midfield and returned the interception 50 yards for yet another score to complete the improbable defensive scoring flurry and send the Cougars into halftime with a comfortable 28-0 lead.

The Cougar offense, which drove 94 yards in 18 plays but fumbled at the Simon Fraser one-yard line before the scoring outburst late in the second quarter, opened up the second half with a 10-play, 81-yard touchdown drive and produced three third-quarter touchdowns to open up a commanding 48-0 edge.

Junior quarterback Andrew Elffers delivered a 27-yard scoring strike to Ethan Zeidler before Elffers kept it from a yard out for another score. Sophomore running back Kurt Scoby punched in a three-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 48-0 in the closing seconds of the third quarter.

Bohanna forced another fumble deep in Simon Fraser territory, setting up the Cougars for Scoby's three-yard score, and Azusa Pacific registered a safety after Jacob Hall's 49-yard punt pinned the Clan at their own 12-yard line. The snap from center went through Richardson's hands, and with the Cougar defense in pursuit, Richardson kicked the loose ball out of the back of the end zone to take the safety.

Elffers was efficient with the football, completing 16-of-22 passes for 143 yards while posting his fifth game this season with a completion percentage of at least 70 percent. He also served as the Cougars' leading rusher with 40 rushing yards on eight carries. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Brandon Jackson was the leading receiver with nine catches for 110 yards, the third straight game the Cougars have produced a 100-yard receiver.
