Balanced Leadership

Box Score

AZUSA, Calif. -- Playing in its first game this year in the role of the Pacific West Conference leader, Azusa Pacific produced five double-figure scorers and a 91-75 over Notre Dame de Namur Monday evening at the Felix Event Center.

The win came just 48 hours on the heels of an emotional 73-71 road win over No. 8-ranked California Baptist, and it extends the Cougars' season-long winning streak to six games heading into a three-game Bay Area road trip which starts Thursday in Oakland at Holy Names. Azusa Pacific improves to 13-3 overall, 7-1 in the PacWest, while Notre Dame de Namur falls to 1-15 overall, 0-9 PacWest.

"Coming off such a short turnaround, we just wanted to play aggressive and blitz them at the beginning," Azusa Pacific head coach Justin Leslie said. "My hat's off to NDNU for staying in it and keeping us from getting the separation we wanted in the second half, but at the end of the day, we're pleased to get through this weekend with two wins and move on from here."

Senior guard Bruce English led all scorers with 16 points, scoring 11 in the first half as the Cougars raced to a 19-point halftime lead, 45-26. In the opening half, English was a perfect four-for-four from the field, including three three-pointers. Sophomore forward Petar Kutlesicpaced the second-half effort with his 13-point, 15-rebound double-double, collecting nine points and 10 rebounds after halftime. Kutlesic set a new rebounding career-high for the second consecutive home game, and the double-double was his third of the season.

Junior forward Will Ward added 12 points, while junior forward Joey Schreiber added 10 points and nine rebounds to go with sophomore forward Austin Dyer's 10-point effort. The Azusa Pacific front line produced a 40-24 edge in points in the paint, and the Cougars notched a 45-33 edge in rebounding margin.

"Notre Dame de Namur did a job keeping us from getting into the flow of what we wanted to do," Leslie said. "We had to keep forcing the tempo and get the ball in the paint, and I was pleased with the performance of our big guys tonight."

Notre Dame de Namur was led by Tre'Shawn King-Dunbar, who scored 14 points, while Brian Ying added 13 points and a team-high six rebounds for the Argonauts, who registered the highest three-point shooting percentage of any Cougar opponent this year by knocking down 13-of-27 (.481) from three-point range. Only one other team this year (Cal Poly Pomona) has shot three-pointers at a 40 percent clip or better in a game against Azusa Pacific.

"They got into a rhythm and competed hard, and they had one of the best three-point shooting performances we've allowed all year long," Leslie said.

Notre Dame de Namur led twice in the game's first three minutes before a Corey Langerveldthree-pointer sparked a 9-0 run that turned into an early 12-5 advantage, and after NDNU had pulled back within three points, English knocked down a pair of three-pointers in a 13-0 outburst to extend the lead to 31-15.

Early in the second half, the Argonauts nailed five three-pointers during a 15-4 run, closing the gap to six points, 59-53, with 11:15 left in the game. Azusa Pacific built the lead back to a 17-point margin by scoring 18 of the next 25 points, capped by a Schreiber dunk to make it a 77-60 lead with just over five minutes to play. Notre Dame de Namur fashioned one more run, a 9-0 burst to pull within eight points at 77-69, with 3:21 left, but freshman point guard Connor Peterson got the lead back into double digits for good with a layup with three minutes left in the game.

The Cougars kick off three games in five days of a Bay Area road trip with a Thursday, Jan. 21 visit to Holy Names, which is followed by a Saturday afternoon visit to Academy of Art and a Monday, Jan. 25 matchup at Dominican.
