ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Azusa Pacific registered its third-highest single-game rushing performance with 355 yards rushing in a 34-5 win over Dixie State in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday night.
With the victory, the two-time defending GNAC champions extended their conference winning streak to 14 games, and the Cougars have now won 20 of their past 21 GNAC contests dating back to the 2012 season.
Redshirt freshman RB Kurt Scoby followed last week's career-high 164-yard performance with a game-high 157-yard effort on 18 carries with a pair of touchdowns. QuarterbacksAndrew Elffers and Chad Jeffries combined for another 152 yards, with Elffers dashing 70 yards for a fourth-quarter score to put the finishing touches on the Cougars' seventh consecutive road win.
After a scoreless opening quarter, junior CB Tyree Davis had an interception and 30-yard return that set up the Cougar offense at the Dixie State 36-yard line, and four plays later Jeffries connected with Tarik Myles for a 25-yard touchdown pass with 9:32 left in the second quarter. Jeffries found Myles again on the next drive for a 17-yard score, capping a six-play, 49-yard drive that sent Azusa Pacific into halftime with a 14-0 edge.
The Cougars kept the ball on the ground for all five plays of its first offensive possession after halftime, and Scoby finished off the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run to the corner of the end zone to expand Azusa Pacific's lead to 21-0. Scoby added another score, this time from 49 yards with 12:54 left in the fourth quarter, to answer a Dixie State field goal, and Elffers provided the final score on a 70-yard option keeper with 1:24 left in the game.
Only two Dixie State drives consumed more than 17 yards, and the Cougars held Red Storm QBs to just 5-of-23 passing for 20 yards in the game. Davis and true freshman LB Mykal Walker each had an interception, and sophomore DE Jason Schwartz forced another turnover by forcing and recovering a fumble on a third-quarter sack of Dixie State QB Blake Barney.
Walker finished with seven tackles, including a sack, along with his interception, and junior rover Jonathan Thropay notched a team-high eight tackles.
