SEATTLE, Wash. – After pushing the opposition to the limit last weekend in Alaska but coming up just short each time, the Azusa Pacific volleyball team left no doubt who was the best team on the court on Thursday.
In their opening match of the GNAC/PacWest challenge, the Cougars swept past host Seattle Pacific 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-18). It was the second all-time meeting between the two schools and each time Azusa Pacific has swept the Falcons.
Azusa Pacific was dominate in their three-set victory as they never trailed at a critical point in any set. Katy Crouse recorded a match high 11 kills while Ally Gonzalez put together the best match of her young Cougar tenure. The sophomore pieced together a 10-kill performance with a .389 hitting percentage.
Handing out the offense was the duo of Jewels Tavera and Jaden Louie as they recorded 18 and 17 assists respectively.
Along the backline Ashley Swatek had a match high 18 digs.
Despite the 0-4 start coming into Thursday, Azusa Pacific has reason for optimism. Aside from pushing a pair of nationally ranked teams during their opening weekend, when the Cougars last started with such a deficit in 1997 they won five straight matches.
Azusa Pacific will get a chance to add to their winning ways in the Emerald City with a 9:00 a.m. contest tomorrow against Montana State Billings.
