Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif. – On most occasions a trip the greater San Diego area is filled with a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. Tuesday was anything but that for Azusa Pacific baseball team.
UC San Diego scored at least one run in all but two innings as they recorded a 19-2 victory over the Cougars in Tuesday evening.
In a critical west region match-up, the home team banged out 19 hits as the 23rd ranked Tritons enacted a measure of revenge. UC San Diego entered Tuesday's game ranked third in the region while Azusa Pacific was tied with Cal State L.A. for fifth. The top six teams in the region with qualify for the NCAA West Region Championship in May. Earlier this season the Cougars (24-10) knocked off UC San Diego 6-2 at the Cougar Baseball Complex.
In an effort to evenly distribute the work on the mound, the Cougars sent 11 different pitchers to the bump. For the most part the Tritons had little trouble figuring out how to knock them around. Unfortunately the Cougars defense didn't help their cause as they committed a season high six errors.
On the other side of the field UC San Diego (24-12) employed a similar philosophy as they sent six pitchers to the hill. They combined to strikeout 10 and allow six hits.
Adrian Tovalin and Pablo O'Connor each recorded a hit and RBI for the Cougars. Tovalin hit his fifth home of the season.
Troy Cruz went 3-for-4 with four runs scored while Michael Mann scored twice and drove home four additional runs. Six different hitters posted at least two hits for the Tritons.
After a 13-day hiatus, Azusa Pacific returns to PacWest play this Friday as they travel to the Bay Area for a four-game set against Holy Names.
