AZUSA, Calif. -- With contributions from all six members of its 2015 senior class, Azusa Pacific channeled the emotional pregame ceremony into an unforgettable Senior Day tribute with Monday's season-ending 9-0, 2-1 sweep over Dominican.
"These last two games were fun, and it's satisfying to see them finish well," head coach Carrie Webber said. "The best part of coaching is seeing that growth from start to finish, and all six seniors who were part of this program experienced the type of growth that's very rewarding to see as a coach."
Senior pitcher Destinee Levesque fired a six-hit shutout in the five-inning opener, and she finished off the sweep by picking up the save in the second game. In the team's final turn to bat, all five of the seniors who are position players made it to the plate for an at-bat as the Cougars broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. In fact, when Renae Chappelle came up to hit, the bases were loaded with fellow seniors Sona Babayan, Becca Dawson, and Katrina Oviedo.
"As I stood on first base, I realized who else was on the bases with Renae at the plate, and it just hit me how grateful I was for being able to have such a great experience," Oviedo said. "Today was special, and my entire career was an experience I'll always be thankful for."
Levesque took over at pitcher with a two-run lead in the seventh, putting all six seniors on the field for the final inning, and three of them were involved in a seventh-inning relay throw that took the potential tying run off the bases. Katelyn Harden's double to right-center field scored Leslie Mesa from first base, cutting Azusa Pacific's lead to 2-1, but Dawson's throw from right field was relayed by Oviedo to home plate, and the throw from catcher Madison Hernandez to Chavez caught Harden too far off the base and resulted in the first out of the inning.
Following a Dominican single, Chavez flipped to Oviedo for a force out at second base for the second out, and Levesque finished things off with a game-ending grounder to first base to finish off the win.
"Today felt awesome," Levesque said. "As I've battled back from surgery to play this year, everyone on the team was so supportive even during the times that I struggled. They picked me up the entire season and throughout the games today, and that was a great feeling."
Although they couldn't overshadow the program's seniors, Hernandez and Nicki Sprague finished off the season with impressive milestones of their own. Hernandez, a junior, belted her 14th home run of the season in the first game, tying Azusa Pacific's single-season home run record (set in 2002 by Lorna Lyttle) with a three-run shot in the third inning that cleared the left-center field fence to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead. Sprague picked up three hits in four at-bats, including a double in her final at-bat of the day as she chased the PacWest individual batting title. Her performance gave her a final season batting average of .453 to surpass Dixie State's Janessa Bassett for the conference lead (Bassett and Dixie State have two regular-season games left plus potential NCAA Division II playoffs).
"There's a time of reflection that comes with this day as we remember the accomplishments of the seniors, but it's also a time where you look forward and sense some excitement for the next year," Webber said. "While we spend most of today reflecting, it's also exciting to imagine the potential accomplishments the group coming back is capable of producing."
In the opener, Azusa Pacific scored once in each of the first two innings before Hernandez hit her record-tying home run to provide all three runs in the third inning. Freshman first baseman Kayla Jimenez added another three-run home run, her fifth home run of the season, after Hernandez knocked in another run with a two-out double down the right-field line.
Levesque took care of the rest, scattering six hits without a walk while striking out six, to pick up her second shutout of the year.
Chavez scored three runs and stole two bases in the win, and Hernandez went two-for-two with five RBIs as she drove in runs in each of her three plate appearances with a double, home run, and sacrifice fly.
Babayan also had two hits in the opener, and in the second game she added a diving catch on a shallow line drive to left-center field with two runners on base in the top of the first inning. Junior Narissa Garcia and sophomore Carly Xepoleas each tossed three scoreless innings before the Cougars put together a scoring rally in the sixth inning. Sprague got things started with a one-out double, and Janelle Eccles produced the game's first run with a two-out RBI double. After Babayan singled and Dawson drew a walk, Oviedo singled through the right side to score Eccles from third and give Azusa Pacific a two-run cushion.
With the sweep, Azusa Pacific finished the season with a 29-26 overall record, going 14-17 in Pacific West Conference play, while Dominican ends the year at 14-32 overall, 11-20 PacWest.
