Series Evened Up

Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Lancers answered back.

Just 24 hours removed from topping California Baptist, the Cougars couldn't get their second straight victory against their rivals as Azusa Pacific dropped an 11-4 decision.

The teams complete their four-game PacWest set tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at Noon.

The two through four batters for the Lancers did most of the damage. Through their first nine combined at-bats, the trio of Andy Crowley, Antonio Chavarria and Stephen Lohr had eight hits with six RBI and five runs scored. They completed the game with 11 hits, six runs and nine RBI.

California Baptist (24-16, 16-6 PacWest) starter Tyson Miller struck out 10 allowed five hits in his six innings on the bump.

The Lancers scored during their first at-bats when Chavarria singled home Crowley with one out. Azusa Pacific responded in the third inning when Joe Huthsing hit his second homerun of the second with a deep blast to left centerfield that cleared the scoreboard.

The home team retook the lead right after the Cougars (26-14, 16-10) tied it. Bryce Macy scored the Lancers second run on a Chavarria single. Lohr followed with an RBI single which scored Crowley to give the home squad a 3-1 edge.

California Baptist broke open the game in the fifth inning. The Lancers put their first two hitters on base as Crowley and Chavarria singled to start the inning. The next batter, Lohr, chased Cougar starter Jacob Cage with a three-run homerun to left centerfield.

The Lancers got deeper in the Azusa Pacific bullpen in the sixth inning with three runs on three hits. Lohr started the scoring with double to right centerfield which scored Zack Norris. The final runs of the inning came courtesy of a two-run single by Brian Ruhm which scored A.J. David and Lohr.

Azusa Pacific put together a threat in the seventh inning as they sent six batters to plate. The Cougars crossed the plate twice. Huthsing scored the second run for Azusa Pacific on an infield single by Blake James. Mitch Dergazarian then scored on a RBI fielder's choice ground out by Daniel Martin. Any hopes of a Cougars comeback were put to the wayside when a Chavarria single scored two as the home team upped their lead to 11-3.

The final run of the game came in the eighth inning when Pablo O'Connor hit his third home run of the season down the leftfield line.

Blake James was the only Cougars with a multi-hit game as the freshman went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
