Cougars Reach PacWest Semis

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- No. 2 seed Azusa Pacific advanced to the semifinals of the Pacific West Conference tournament with a quick 5-0 victory over Hawai`i Hilo on Wednesday afternoon, extending the Cougars' winning streak to nine matches.

Match Results

Azusa Pacific swept the three doubles matches and got wins from Alan Leahy  and Ben Eger  in singles to clinch the fifth point in just over two and a half hours. The four remaining singles matches were unfinished.

At No. 1 doubles Gary Yam  and Jan Meyer  won 8-1, and at No. 2 doubles Eger and Pascal Engel, improved to 16-6 on the season with an 8-4 triumph. Shepherd Newcomb  and Leahy won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles, avenging an 8-5 loss to Brandon Kang and Daniel Tada earlier in the season.

Then in singles, Eger won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Leahy won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Both Leahy and Eger have now won eight of their last 10 singles matches this year.  For Eger, the victory was the 75th of his career in singles, becoming the sixth Cougar to reach the mark since 2002.

Azusa Pacific steps right back on the courts in Surprise at 9:00a.m. Thursday against BYU-Hawaii looking to return to the conference title match. The Cougars defeated BYU-Hawaii 5-4 in March at the Cougar Tennis Complex.
