Game One – Holy Names 8, Azusa Pacific 2
Despite outhitting the Hawks for the second time in three games, Holy Names still posted the victory. Azusa Pacific put together a 10-hit effort as a team but left 12 runners on base in the defeat.
Chris Gnos started the scoring with a grand slam in the third inning. The junior's big fly went over the right field wall for the Hawks first hit of the game. The previous three runners reach base via two walks and a Cougar error. After allowing the home run and issuing six walks, the Cougars took starting pitcher Wyatt Wood out of the game.
In the fourth inning the Cougars got a pair of runs back as they snapped a 15-inning scoreless streak. Blake James singled home Brian Magana with the one-out base knock to right center. Daniel Martin's two-out single scored James three batters later as Azusa Pacific cut their deficit in half.
Holy Names increased their lead in the bottom half of the stanza by scoring three runs on two hits while taking advantage of a Cougar error. The Hawks scored all their runs with two outs. Gnos hit a weak infield single that scored Dusty Zeisler and eventually scored Nicholas Wagner on an error. Two batters later Dominac Morbidelli worked a base loaded walk which scored Zach Verlaan.
In the last five innings the Cougars were held to just three hits as the combination of Hawks starting pitcher Ricardo Torres and relief pitcher Brady Navarro never allowed past second base.
Azusa Pacific had four different player record two hits as Magana, Martin, Ryan Santana and Mitch Dergazarian turned the trick.
Torres earned the victory by going 6.2 innings and striking out three. After allowing seven hits in the first three innings, Torres settled down as he improved his record to 3-4.
Game Two – Azusa Pacific 1, Holy Names 0
The Cougars turned to Michael Fairchild to salvage the final game of the four-game set.
Azusa Pacific scored the only run of the seven-inning nightcap when Sean Aspinall reached on a fielder's choice that scored Ryan Santana from third base in the second inning. Santana started the inning with a double to left field. In the third inning the Cougars put Mitch Dergazarian and Blake James on third and second base respectively but a Santana pop-up to shortstop ended the opportunity.
Fairchild was solid as he allowed just one runner to reach scoring position in recording his third complete game of the season. The right hander struck out five and surrendered two hits as he upped his record to 5-3.
Micah Ashburn was the tough luck loser as he also threw a complete game. He allowed five hits and struck out one.
Offensively for the Cougars Santana's double was the only extra base hit of the afternoon for both teams.
