Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 OAKLAND, Calif. – Looking to get into the win column for the first time in April, the Cougars came up short in both end of a doubleheader.

Azusa Pacific lost the first game by a 7-3 count then dropped a quickly moving nightcap 1-0 to Holy Names. Azusa Pacific falls to 24-12 overall and 14-8 in league games while the Hawks move to 17-21 and 8-14 respectively.

The teams will complete the four-game PacWest set on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Game One – Holy Names 7, Azusa Pacific 3

The Hawks snapped a four-game losing skid against Azusa Pacific despite only generating three hits.

Zach Verlaan put the home team on the scoreboard with a homerun to lead off the second inning. The Hawks were then able to piece together three more runs in the next frame without a hit. After back-to-back walks to Sean Carrington and Dusty Zeilser to start the inning, Matthew Dufford committed to a sacrifice bunt. The ball was thrown away by Cougar starting pitcher Josh Staumont which allowed Carrington and Zeisler to score. Dufford then scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Nicholas Wagner.

Azusa Pacific scored all their runs in the fourth inning. Brian Magana hit a sacrifice fly that scored Adrian Tovalin. Michael Staudinger ripped a two-run triple to center with two outs that scored Blake James and Anthony Annunziata.

The Cougars mounted their next best scoring threat in the seventh inning. With two outs Mitch Dergazarian doubled down the left field line then Daniel Martin earned a walk. However, the two-out chance ended when Ryan Santana flied out to right field.

Holy Names converted on their two-out scoring chance in the bottom half of that inning as Carrington worked a walk then Dominic Mordidelli was hit by a pitch. Dufford drove them home with a single up the middle. The Hawks final run came when Zeilser worked a base loaded walk in the eighth inning.

Staumont struck out 10-plus batters for the third time in 2015. The right hander struck out 12 and allowed just one hit in 6.2 innings.

Offensively Dergazarian had the only multi-hit game by either team with a 2-for-5 effort.

Game Two – Holy Names 1, Azusa Pacific 0

It was a pitcher's duel as the Hawks earned the Friday afternoon sweep. It was the third time the Cougars played in a 1-0 game in 2015; Azusa Pacific dropped two of those contests.

Cougar starter Jacob Cage tossed 7.0 innings where he struck out four and gave-up five hits. Jonny Reid threw a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts.

Holy Names starter Jayse Bannister went the distance. He allowed just four hits and struck out two in a game that lasted just under two hours.

The Cougars advanced a runner into scoring position in two innings and went down in order on six occasions. Azusa Pacific put a threat together in the final inning as Daniel Martin singled then Pablo O'Connor walked with two outs. However, Adrian Tovalin lined out to third base for the final out.

The Hawks scored the only run in the fourth inning when Ben Gamba hit his third homerun of the season with a solo shot to left field.

Martin had a team high two hits in his four at-bats.
