Sweeping Success

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AZUSA, Calif. – It was a day of season firsts for Azusa Pacific.

The Cougars got their first four-game PacWest sweep since early last season as they took a pair from Hawaii Pacific.

Just past the halfway point in the season the 18th ranked Cougars are 24-8 overall and 14-6 in league games. Hawaii Pacific is 12-13 and 9-11 respectively. 

Game One – Azusa Pacific 15, Hawaii Pacific 11 

Azusa Pacific scored a run in all but one inning and all of them were needed in a high scoring contest.

The 15 runs are the third most runs Azusa Pacific has scored this season.

The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a leadoff double by Jordan Brower was cashed in on when Pablo O'Connor singled him home two batters later. Hawaii Pacific responded in the third inning by scoring three runs on two hits while taking advantage of a Cougar throwing error.

Despite their two-run deficit, Azusa Pacific put together their highest scoring in the game with a four-run third frame. The Cougars pieced together four runs on four hits highlighted by a three-run deep fly from Daniel Martin then a solo bomb from Ryan Santana. The offensive onslaught continued in the fourth inning as the Cougars pieced together a three-run inning on two hits. 

In the fifth inning Santana, Blake James and Brian Magana each hit two-baggers as the Cougars put two more runs on the scoreboard to up their lead to 10-3. Hawaii Pacific was able to trim their deficit to 10-6 when a Bronson Aiwohi double scored three runs in the sixth inning. The Cougars got a run back in their portion of the stanza when Martin scored on a Santana sacrifice fly to deep center to give the home an 11-6 edge.

Martin crunched his second big fly of the game in the seventh inning with a three-run shot over the left field wall to push the Azusa Pacific lead to 14-6. However, the Sharks rallied when they sent 10 batters to plate in the eighth inning. They were able to put together a five-run inning with just one extra base hit as they trailed just 14-11 after the stanza. The game's final run came when Santana scored on a wild pitch in eighth inning. 

Martin completed the game with two hits in his four at-bats. He drove in seven runs and scored three times. Santana scored three times and drove in two during his 2-for-3 effort. Blake James came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. 

Wyatt Wood earned the win by striking out seven and scattering six hits in 5.0 innings of work.

Game Two – Azusa Pacific 1, Hawaii Pacific 0

The Cougars got their first 1-0 win since April 6, 2013.

It was a pitcher duel through the first three-and-half innings as Cougar start Mike Fairchild struck out five through the first four innings while Hawaii Pacific's Ethan Kalin struck out three and faced one batter over the minimum through his first three inning. Azusa Pacific put themselves in scoring position in the final innings before finally breaking through.

The Cougars put together a solid scoring threat in the fourth inning. Mitch Dergazarian started the frame with a single then Daniel Martin put a deep opposite field drive into the sky but the right fielder made a leaping catch against the wall to rob the junior of a hit and potential extra bases. Still Azusa Pacific had runners on second and third with one out but couldn't drive them home. 

Azusa Pacific once again put a threat together in the fifth inning but they left the base loaded but they were able to chase Kalin and get into the Sharks bullpen.  The Cougars persistent paid off in the sixth inning. Adrian Tovelin singled with one out then Pablo O'Connor ripped a double down the left field line. With runners on second and third and the infield pulled in pitch hitter Ryan Santana smoked a ground ball that was knocked down by the second baseman; none the less pitch runner Austin Shives scored. 

In the final inning, Hawaii Pacific's James Carraway put a deep drive into left field but it was track down by Santana for the second out. Fairchild got the final batter to pop out to right field.

Fairchild struck out five, gave-up five hits and walked just one for the complete game. It was his second complete game of the season.
