A Statement Victory

AZUSA, Calif. --If this was a match to see how much Azusa Pacific has progressed since the second match of the season, where the Cougars defeated Point Loma 5-4, the answer was pretty clear. Azusa Pacific put on a dominating performance, winning all nine matches of the day for a 9-0 win over Point Loma, which is ranked No. 5 in the West Region.

"Our goal is to just keep progressing as a team," head coach Mark Bohren said. "We want to peak at the right time, which means getting better every day, so it was nice to see today that the things we are doing in practice are paying off."

Just as they did in the first meeting, the Cougars took all three doubles matches, doing so for the sixth time this season. The team then got a quick 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles from Jan Meyer over the No. 5 player in the region Andre Staab, putting the Cougars one point away from victory.

Senior Gary Yam supplied Azusa Pacific with that point, defeating Daniel Milliken 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. In their meeting in February, Yam led by a set and a break, before Milliken fought back to win in three sets. This time, however, Yam held on for his ninth victory this season in 15 matches.

At No. 2 singles, Ben Eger had his third match this year against Martin Blaho and the pair had split their first two matches with Eger winning in a match-tiebreak in the fall and Blaho winning in straight sets in February.

Eger won the rubber match 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, saving a match point in a victory for the second time in two days. Blaho broke Eger's serve at 4-4 to earn a chance to serve out the match. However, on his one match point, the Sea Lion double faulted. Eger broke back and Blaho double faulted again on Eger's first match point to give the match away.

Sophomore Pascal Engel also got a win over James Tenbroeck 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Engel trailed by a break for much of the first set, but broke back to even the score at 4-4 and then got another break before serving out the first set.

It was eight matches in a row for the Cougars after sophomore Alan Leahy got a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles. With the match in hand, Cameron Backman was subbed in for Tomas Aranguiz at No. 6 singles. Backman came back from down a set to get his third win of the season, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.

In doubles, Eger and Engel finished first, winning 8-5 for their third consecutive triumph at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles Leahy and Shepherd Newcomb combined for their 10th win this season, defeating the Sea Lions 8-4.

At No. 1 doubles, Jan Meyer and Gary Yam came all the way back from a 4-1 deficit and won seven of the next nine games to complete the doubles sweep.

The Cougars play again on Tuesday when they host Williams, and then will play Hawai`i Hilo on Friday.
