AZUSA, Calif. -- Throughout his career at Azusa Pacific, senior Gary Yam has played in a lot of spots in the Cougars' lineup. However, when the matches get close, his position stays the same. He's the Cougars' closer.

Yam resumed that position Wednesday afternoon, when he defeated Kyle Barnes 10-6 in a match tiebreaker to give the Cougars a 4-3 win over Army.
"I've been in that situation before with the match on the line, but this time was different since it was a match-tiebreak," Yam said. "I just had to play with a really high intensity and put the pressure on him early. I knew that if I won points on my serve I would be in a good position to win the match."
After Alan Leahy closed out his match with a victory at No. 5 singles in straight sets, all attention turned to No. 4, where a 10-point tiebreaker would determine the match. Yam raced out to an 8-1 lead, winning one of the points with a broken string. He eventually had four match points, and after failing to convert the first, Yam wrapped up the match on the second try as a Barnes passing shot sailed long.
"I was still up 8-5, so I knew I could still gamble a little," Yam said. "I decided to start coming into the net as a surprise tactic, and once I put away the first overhead I had four match points."
The Army won the only doubles point available in the match that was played under NCAA Division I rules, but Jan Meyer quickly evened the overall score with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Azusa Pacific later had its back against the wall after Alex Van Velzer defeated Ben Eger at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2 and Harrison McCormick beat Tomas Aranguiz by the same score at No. 6.
In need of a victory on all three remaining courts, Pascal Engel, Yam and Leahy all won their first set. Leahy had a 5-2 lead in the first set erased by Michael Nguyen and the two eventually went to a tiebreak on court 5. Leahy got the lead in the tiebreaker and had three set points, but Nguyen saved all three to get to the second changeover of the tiebreaker. Leahy turned to his defense to earn the last two points and win the first set 7-6(6).
Engel dropped his second set and was the first to start a match tiebreak. The sophomore got the early mini-break and eventually expanded his lead to two mini-breaks to get a 6-0, 3-6, 10-5 win to keep the Cougars in the match.
Leahy wrestled away control of his match in the second set to get out to another 5-2 lead. He held onto his lead the second time immediately getting the second break for a 7-6(6), 6-2 victory, setting up Yam's heroic's.
In doubles, Azusa Pacific looked to be turning things around after dropping each of the last six doubles sets with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles from Eger and Engel. However, right after Yam and Meyer broke to get back on serve at No. 1 doubles, the Army got to games in a row to claim the set 6-3. Shepherd Newcomb and Leahy also dropped a tight doubles set 7-5 at No. 3.
