Shark Bit

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Azusa Pacific men's tennis team got a look at what it looks like to be an elite NCAA Division II tennis program after dropping its second match in as many days to another top five team in the nation, losing 9-0 to Hawai`i Pacific on Tuesday morning.

Match Results

The undefeated Sharks are ranked No. 2 in the country  and just last week took out the No. 1 and defending national champion West Florida. Hawai`i Pacific continued their dominance during their San Diego trip with their fourth consecutive win over a ranked opponent, winning all 15 sets against the Cougars.

The Sharks won all three doubles, but Pascal Engel and Ben Eger gave them the best match at No. 2 doubles, which was tied 7-7 before Maik Burlage and Marko Lenz won the final two games to avoid the tiebreak.

After doubles, both teams pulled their No. 1 singles players out of the lineup. Alan Leahy and Tomas Aranguiz both had tight first sets, but eventually lost with Jakub Hadrava beating Leahy 7-5, 6-4, and Clemens Graute overcoming Aranguiz 7-6, 6-2.

The Cougars' schedule doesn't lighten up as they will get right back on the court on Wednesday to host Army and then on Thursday, Azusa Pacific will play NCAA Division III's No. 1 Amherst.
