Woody to the Rescue

Box Score FRESNO, Calif. – The Cougars turned to the pitching mound in helping them stop a three-game losing streak.

Wyatt Wood was on point from the first pitch in leading the Cougars to a 3-0 victory over Fresno Pacific in the final game of the four-game set.

The sophomore set collegiate career highs for innings pitched (7.0), fewest hits allowed (2) and strikeouts (10) during his 105-pitch effort. The sophomore lowered his season ERA to 3.38. Josh Grajeda came out of the bullpen to earn his second save of the season. Grajeda pitched the final two innings where he struck out four and allowed two base runners.

Offensively Pablo O'Conner recorded his third multi-hit game in his last five with a 2-for-4 effort. Adrian Tovalin and Jordan Brower each scored once and drove in another run as both went 1-for-3 at the plate. Brian Magana also factored into the scoring with an RBI.

Magana started the Cougars scoring when he hit a sacrifice fly I the fourth inning that scored Jordan Brower. That run broke a season long 12-inning scoreless streak for the potent Azusa Pacific offense.

Wood continued to mow down the Sunbirds offense while clinging to a one-run lead. Brower gave his team a 2-0 edge when his groundout scored Rene Reyes for third base in the seventh inning. The afternoon's final run came in the eighth inning when Tovalin smashed a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall for his second home run of the season.

Azusa Pacific takes the next week off before hosting Hawaii Hilo next Saturday, March 21 at Noon.
