Box Score LOS ANGELES – The hit parade continues.
The potent Azusa Pacific offense continued to impress as they beat Cal State L.A. 13-6 on Tuesday evening.
The Cougars, who entered the game ranked 15th in the nation, banged out at least 10 hits for the 13th time this season in the first match-up between the two schools since the 2008 season. Tuesday's win saw Azusa Pacific crank out 17 hits.
Pablo O'Connor had his best day in a Cougar uniform as the sophomore went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, three runs scored as he hit his second homerun of the season. Adrian Tovalin recorded his seventh multi-hit game of the year with his 4-for-5 day at the plate in just his second start at third base.
Daniel Martin extended his hitting streak to 19 games. Jordan Brower, who was named the PacWest Player of the Week, drove in two runs during his 2-for-6 contest for his team leading 14th multi-hit and eighth multi-RBI game.
Azusa Pacific's strong offense was in full force for the first three innings. The Cougars plated four runs on four hits and took advantage of a Golden Eagle error in the opening frame. Brower, Ryan Santana, O'Connor and Tovalin each recorded an RBI during the inning. In the second inning another Brower RBI base knock put the Cougars in front 5-0.
Dormant in the first inning, the Cal State L.A. offense put three runs on the scoreboard as they pieced together three runs on four singles and two fielder's choice plays. Despite having their lead trimmed to just two runs at 5-3, the Cougars got two runs back in the third inning with a RBI single by Brian Magana, which chased Golden Eagle starting pitch Greg Humbert, then a single by Michael Staudinger that scored Tovalin.
In the fourth inning Cal State L.A. got into the Cougar bullpen as starting pitcher Joel Belk couldn't get through the frame in an attempt to get his first win of the season. The Golden Eagles put a serious scoring threat together as they put the first three batters on-base. However, the Azusa Pacific bullpen combination of Joe Manzi and Mitchell Williams surrendered just one run. The home team challenged the Azusa Pacific lead with two runs and two hits in the fifth inning as the Cougars lead was trimmed to 7-6.
What proved to be a huge moment in the middle innings came when O'Connor hit his second homerun of the season with a two-out, three-run shot to right center field to increase the Cougars lead to 10-6 after six innings. That big fly seemed to deflate Cal State L.A. as they put just three runners on-base in the rest of the game.
The Cougars put insurance runs together in the eighth inning as Martin scored on a throwing error and Cam Bennett touched home plate thanks to a Tovalin single. Paul Mendendez drove home his first run of the season with a double that scored Mitch Dergazarian in the ninth inning to complete the scoring.
Azusa Pacific will hit the road this weekend for a four-game set against league foe Fresno Pacific beginning Thursday.
