Getting On A Roll

AZUSA, Calif. -- After starting the season with three tightly contested matches, the Azusa Pacific men's tennis team has picked up two comfortable wins in as many days with Friday afternoon's 8-0 win over Holy Names.

Match Results

The Cougars started the day with its third sweep in doubles this season, and head coach Mark Bohren swapped freshman Cameron Backman, where he earned his first singles victories as a Cougar at No. 5 singles.

Backman broke the serve of Patrick Johnson in the 12th game to win the first set 7-5. Then the freshman raced out to a 4-1 lead in the second set. Despite giving the break back, Backman held on for the victory in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.

Ben Eger got his most comfortable win of the year for Azusa Pacific, defeating Matthew Halligan at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-1. The pair had met in the second round of the ITA/USTA Small College West Region tournament in the fall, where Eger had to come back in the third set match-tiebreak to get the win. However this time, Eger got through much more comfortably, breaking his opponent's serve five times in seven attempts.

Tomas Aranguiz played No. 4 singles for the first time in his career, and he came through a tight match against Brook Workeneh 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-8 in the match-tiebreaker to improve to 4-1 in 2015. Aranguiz led 4-1 in the second set and 4-1 in the match-tiebreak, but both times Workeneh came back to even the score. The junior eventually converted his second match point to get the victory for Azusa Pacific.

At No. 1 singles, Jan Meyer got his fourth win of the season, and in each of his wins, he hasn't lost more than three games. He defeated Tracy Beblie 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, Pascal Engel had a quick recovery after spending over four hours on court the day before to win 6-3, 6-1 for the Cougars' first win this season at the No. 3 position.

Engel also won in doubles 8-2 with Eger at the No. 2 position. However, Newcomb and Alan Leahy gave the Cougars' their first point of the day with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Meyer and Gary Yam went on to complete the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.

The Cougars are back in action for a third consecutive day against a former conference rival and future PacWest opponent Concordia. The Eagles are 5-2 this year and have won four of their last five matches by a score of 9-0.
