AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific returned home from a high-scoring weekend tournament with masterful pitching performances from Narissa Garcia and Carly Xepoleas, who each tossed complete-game victories in a 2-0, 3-1 sweep in an NCAA Division II non-conference matchup with Adelphi University.
Garcia fired a two-hit shutout in the opener, her second shutout this season and fourth of her career, and Xepoleas scattered one run on five hits in the nightcap to complete the sweep of Adelphi, which has been an NCAA Division II Northeast Regionals participant for three straight years and eight times since 2000. The Cougars, who batted .383 as a team in five games at last weekend's Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas, won both games despite registering just six total hits in the doubleheader.
The sweep gives Azusa Pacific a 6-5 record heading into this weekend's Pacific West Conference-opening four-game series with Academy of Art, which continues a 12-game homestand for the Cougars.
In the opener, Garcia surrendered a leadoff single in the second inning and a one-out double in the fourth. In both innings, she didn't let another ball out of the infield, and she struck out consecutive batters to close out the fourth inning for two of her four strikeouts as the game remained scoreless into the sixth inning.
Adelphi pitcher Lindsay Mapes matched Garcia through five scoreless frames until the Cougars broke through for two runs in the sixth. Illiana Jimenez led off the frame with an infield single, advancing all the way to third on an error. After Nicki Sprague drew a walk and stole second, Sona Babayan dropped a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt that scored Jimenez from third. With Sprague at third, Babayan stole second, and Katrina Oviedo repeated the fielder's choice sacrifice to score Sprague from third and give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
Garcia retired the side in the seventh, inducing a pair of popups before striking out the final batter to finish off the win.
Xepoleas got some early run support after pitching around a one-out walk in the first inning. Abry Moreno drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the bottom of the first, and Jimenez reached on a bunt single before both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Sprague and Babayan each drove in a run with consecutive groundouts, giving Azusa Pacific an early 2-0 lead.
Adelphi got a run back in the third inning on Victoria Wink's two-out RBI single, but she was thrown out by Moreno at second base to end the inning. Xepoleas retired the next eight Panthers, and Sprague smashed a one-out home run to right field for an insurance run heading into the seventh inning. Nicole Camera drew a one-out walk, which Megan Lewis followed up with a single to center field, giving Adelphi its best scoring threat since the early innings. However, Xepoleas dismissed the Panthers with a groundout and a game-ending strikeout.
Jimenez and Desiree Chavez each hit safely in both games of the doubleheader, accounting for four of Azusa Pacific's six hits on the evening. Sprague had one of the others with the solo home run, her first of the season, and Kayla Jimenez blooped a base hit into shallow left field in the opener.
