Box Score 2 ST. GEORGE, Utah – Azusa Pacific put up numbers not seen this decade.
The Cougars offense was clicking on all cylinders in their doubleheader contest against Montana State-Billings.
Game One – Azusa Pacific 25, Montana State-Billings 7
The Cougars offense was in full force during the blowout victory. All told 11 players recorded at least one hit for the Cougars.
It was the most runs an Azusa Pacific team has scored since an April 4, 2009 contest against San Diego Christian; a 32-6 win. The Cougars scored in seven of the eight innings they came to plate. As a team the Cougars 25 hits came within striking distance of the school record of 30 set back in 1975.
The most productive inning came at the game's midway point when they scored eight times in the fifth inning. Azusa Pacific got off to a solid start with a seven-run first inning. They also put a five-spot on the scoreboard in the eighth inning.
A host of players put together staggering offensive numbers. Austin Shives and Jordan Browers each recorded a team high four hits. Brower also drove in five and crossed the plate three times. Shives scored three times and had two RBIs.
Daniel Martin continued his tremendous start by going 2-for-4 with four runs scored and four RBIs. Cam Bennett scored a team best five runs.
All told 11 players recorded at least one hit for the Cougars.
Game Two – Azusa Pacific 16, Montana State Billings 13
The Cougars gave themselves a solid lead early than put runs on the scoreboard late to ensure the victory.
With Azusa Pacific leading 8-3 after four innings, the Montana State Billings offense came to life as they outscored the Cougars by a combined 9-1 in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 12-9 lead heading into the final third of the contest.
Despite the three-run deficit Azusa Pacific rallied to tie the game at 12-12 in the seventh inning. With two outs Daniel Martin hit a two-run single that scored Michael Staudinger and Austin Shives. Jordan Brower came-up next and singled which scored Mitch Dergazarian to tie the game.
Although Montana State Billings took a 13-12 lead after the eighth inning, the Cougars put a four-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the ninth. The go ahead hit came from Martin when his two-run double with one-out gave the Cougars a 14-13 lead. Azusa Pacific put two insurance runs together when Martin scored on a Ryan Santana double then Santana scored on a throwing error by the pitcher.
Michael Shaw and Jonathan Velasco teamed up on the mound in the ninth inning as the Cougars sealed the win.
