Mastering A Craft

Box Score

AZUSA, Calif. -- It took almost five minutes before Azusa Pacific surrendered a point to The Master's College in a dominant 104-49 win Friday night at the Felix Event Center, and the Cougar defense didn't make the next 35 minutes a whole lot easier, forcing 20 turnovers and limiting the Mustangs to a 33 percent (21-for-63) shooting night.

Even Azusa Pacific's free throw defense was good on a night when the Cougars turned those 20 turnovers into a 26-1 edge in points off turnovers. The Master's went just six-of-17 on free throws (35 percent) and only hit one-of-17 three-point attempts.

"One of our seniors talked to the team yesterday, and his message to his teammates was that if we want to be good, we have to be tough," Azusa Pacific head coach Justin Leslie said. "For us, tough means doing the little things and competing in the details, and I thought we saw that in action on the floor tonight. Our last two games haven't been as clean as we wanted them to be, and our success tonight came from a commitment to those little things that turn out to be winning basketball plays for us. Seeing that commitment lead to success on the court like this was very encouraging."

Five Cougars reached double figures in scoring, led by sophomore forward Austin Dyer's career-high 23-point effort, while sophomore forward Petar Kutlesic posted the second double-double of his career (and first this season) with a 10-point, 13-rebound performance. Senior guard Bruce English and sophomore forward Corey Langerveld each added 14 points off the bench, and senior guard LyDell Cardwell tallied 12.

Azusa Pacific hadn't held an opponent below 50 points since a 67-46 win over Concordia in the 2009 Golden State Athletic Conference tournament. It was the largest margin of victory Azusa Pacific enjoyed since a 63-point (115-52) win over Trinity Western in the 2007-08 season, and it was the first time the Cougars scored over 100 while allowing less than 50 in a home game since a 109-40 win over Life Bible College in the 2001-02 season.

The Cougars scored on the opening possession, built its early lead to 29-6 and cruised to a 22-point halftime edge at 48-26. The second half was more of the same for Azusa Pacific, which reeled off a 21-4 run immediately following halftime.

Senior guard Bruce English and sophomore forward Corey Langerveld scored 14 points each, while The Master's was led by a 10-point effort from Reid Shackleford. Three other Cougars made their collegiate debut, as freshmen guards Caleb DeFabiis and Jimmy Whitealso registered their first career points in the win.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to 3-1 overall on the season. The Master's, which entered the game 2-2, played Friday night's game as an exhibition contest which will not count against the Mustangs' season record. The Cougars return to action in another week, visiting Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday, Nov. 24, before hosting Young Harris (Ga.) College on Friday, Nov. 27, at 7:30 p.m.
