FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Azusa Pacific swimmers set course for the great white north of Alaska for a pair of dual meets with the University of Alaska Fairbanks on Friday and Saturday.
Friday, Oct. 16 – Alaska Fairbanks 104, Azusa Pacific 101

Azusa Pacific's quality of depth nearly produced a victory in the season's first dual meet but the host Nanooks claimed just enough top finishes to grab the team win. Of the 12 events competed the Cougars took a first time in four of them. Furthermore they grabbed two of the top three finishes in six events yet couldn't quite grab enough team points in the process.
Bringing home a pair of top finishes was Rosalee Mira Santa Ana. The sophomore took the lead in the 1000-yard freestyle event by the fourth lap and never relinquished it as she touched the wall in 10:30.30 for the Cougars first top finish of the evening in the meet's second event. In the 10th event of the night Santa Ana won the 500-yard freestyle event in 5:09.94.
Heidi Zuniga charged back in the 100-yard butterfly to win with a time of 1:00.41 After trailing by .20 seconds at the halftime point, Zungia swam a great second 50 yards to overtake the Nanooks top finisher by .43 seconds.
The 200-yard freestyle team of Erica Knudsen, Elodie Poo Cheong, Santa Ana and Alyse Darnall had a tight match-up with the Alaska Fairbanks 'A' team but a strong anchor leg by Darnall secure the win with a time of 1:41.00. The Nanooks top team was .29 behind.
Saturday, Oct. 17 – Azusa Pacific 106, Alaska Fairbanks 98
The Cougars enacted a measure of revenge less than 24 hours later when they got a 106-98 win.
With the schedule of events changed up a bit from Friday's meet, the Cougars won five of the 12 competitions to eek out the tight win.

Rosalee Mira Santa Ana, once again, played a big role in the Azusa Pacific scoring. She won the 1650-yard freestyle event by almost 14 seconds as she touched the wall in 17:40.84. The sophomore concluded her afternoon with a first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.26).
A pair of first-year swimmers made an impact in the triumph. Elodie Poo Cheong won a tight 200-yard freestyle event as she edged out teammate Sydney Bello (2:01.08 to 2:01.84). Ultimately the first and second place team points proved vital. Abigail Wiet won her first dual competition as a collegiate swimmer with a time of 4:47.94 in the 400-yard IM.
Heidi Zuniga backed up her victory on Friday in the 100-yard butterfly with a win in the 200-yard butterfly. She completed the event in 2:13.36.
Azusa Pacific also gained valuable points in the 200-yard breastroke where Rachel Allison and Poo Cheong finished second and third respectively.
