Box Score GLENDORA, Calif. -- Andrew Elffers rushed for 118 yards and threw for 185 yards to lead Azusa Pacific to a 38-17 win over Simon Fraser University in Saturday night's regular-season finale. He became the first Cougar to rush and throw for over 100 yards in the same game since Nick Owens did so in the 2012 regular-season finale, which was also a home game against Simon Fraser.
Azusa Pacific used a defensive score early in the second quarter to answer a first-quarter SFU touchdown, as Jabrion Burnside fell on a fumble caused by Matt Hackett's sack in the end zone to tie the game at 7-7 early. The Cougars reeled off 17 consecutive points from there to take control of the game, starting with a Samuela Fanua five-yard scoring rush.
Jacob Hall drilled a 29-yard field goal in the final minute of the second quarter to send Azusa Pacific into halftime with a 17-7 lead, and Elffers scored on a 32-yard scamper in the opening minute of the third quarter to extend the lead to 24-7. He threw a 34-yard TD pass to Blake Robertson, who later took a handoff and threw a touchdown pass of his own to fellow WREthan Zeidler in a 21-point third quarter that gave Azusa Pacific a 38-10 lead.
Robertson became the only player in the GNAC this season to throw and pass for TDs in the same game, and he was one of seven different Cougars with a reception in the victory.
The defense not only registered the first score of the game for the Cougars, it tallied five sacks including two from Hackett, and fellow senior Talaiasi Taueli was involved in two others. Burnside finished with a team-high eight tackles, and junior CB Tyree Davis registered his third interception of the season with a third-quarter pick that set up the Cougar offense's final scoring drive of the game.
Azusa Pacific punted on each of its first three possessions of the game before the fumble recovery for TD, but the offense responded with scores on the next five consecutive drives with a second-quarter touchdown and field goal, followed by three consecutive third-quarter TDs.
Zeidler was the Cougars' leading receiver with four receptions for 74 yards, while Robertson,Grant Widmer, and Tarik Myles collected two receptions each for a combined 106 yards among the trio. Elffers led the rushing attack with 118 yards and a TD on 16 carries, while Fanua added 38 yards and another TD on eight carries.
Azusa Pacific concludes the season 6-4 (3-3 GNAC), while Simon Fraser finishes 0-9 overall (0-6 GNAC).
