Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Stephen Hinkel

Held Down by the Seasiders

AZUSA, Calif. – Using a mixed-and-matched line-up not used this year, the Cougars fell just short in trying to snap a losing skid.

BYU-Hawaii scored the game's only goal midway through second half to post 1-0 victory on Thursday evening.

"We had to move the line-up around with a few guys out tonight and in the first half I thought we moved the ball well, especially in the first 20 minutes. However we just couldn't find that extra level to create a really solid chance," said head coach Dave Blomquist.

A chippy first half saw the Cougars get issued two yellow cards while the Seasiders were yellow carded once. In addition to the card warnings, there were 12 total fouls issued.

The Cougars had a solid opportunity in the 30th minute but Kaleb Armbrust's curling shot from the leftside went just wide of the right post.

With seven minutes left in the stanza the Cougars took the first corner kick of the game but the set piece opportunity couldn't be converted. A minute later Azusa Pacific had a free kick from 20 yards out but John Lee's beautiful attempt on goal was blocked away by Seasider goal keeper Mark Stanley.

As the final minutes ticked away in the first half, a wild sequence ensued. The Cougars played a ball into the box and Stanley was whistled for an illegal touching when his defender played him the ball. An indirect free kick was awarded to the Cougars inside the box with four minutes left, however Azusa Pacific couldn't find a shot on frame.

Just past the 60th minute the Cougars (3-9-2, 3-6-1 PacWest) worked a solid give-and-go but Callum Wallace's shot from the top of the box went just high and wife. The scoreboard had its only goal to post when Brody Berry found the back of the cage in the 63rd minute. Berry took advantage of an Azusa Pacific turnover in the Seasiders (8-7, 6-4) offensive end and blasted a nice shot from 25 yards out into the upper right corner.

Both team continued to press toward the final horn however there was only one official shot on goal for each team the rest of the way. After a red card in the final minutes the Cougars were forced to play a man down and couldn't find a quality chance to get the equalizing goal.

Azusa Pacific's Jorge Pesquera started his first career game in goal where he made two saves. Coming into the game he played just over 20 minutes all season.

"He has been training hard and I felt like it was time to give him a game. I was pleased with how he played tonight and distributed the ball," Blomquist said.

The season's final home game is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Hawaii Hilo as the Cougars will look to send off Keenan Armbrust, Collin Parker, Daniel Stratton, Cole Lambert, Carlos Garcia-Partida and Omar Nunez with a victory.

"We will prepare hard for our final home game. The guys who have been here over the years have battled hard so we want to have a great performance for them on Saturday," Blomquist said.
