AZUSA, Calif. – The final home game was all about the seniors.
Each goal the Cougars scored was courtesy of a soon-to-be graduate as Azusa Pacific posted a 4-2 win against Hawaii Hilo.
Prior to the game the Cougars recognized six individuals were playing their final home game. Keenan Armbrust, Carlos Garcia-Partida, Cole Lambert, Omer Nunez, Collin Parker and Daniel Stratton all went out with a victory on senior night.
"It was great evening for our last home game of the season and for the seniors. It's special to honor these guys for the work they put into the program on this very field," said head coach Dave Blomquist. "It is fitting that the seniors scored each goal tonight. For the quality of players that they are it was only appropriate for them to go out this way."
Azusa Pacific was able to get off to a quick start on Saturday night as Garcia-Partida headed home his second goal of the season. He put the ball into the back of the net after a corner kick off the left side from Cesar Santos. The assist was third for Santos; tying him for the team lead.
After first half Azusa Pacific looked to be in good position as they held an 11-3 edge in total shots and kept the momentum rolling at the start of the second stanza.
In the 55th minute Daniel Stratton scored his first goal of the season with a half-volley right foot boot into the back of the net. The opportunity was created inside the box when the Vulcans couldn't clear the ball and Stratton made an athletic play to secure the goal.
With 22 minutes left Garcia-Partida found the back of the net for the third time in 2015. He grabbed the ball at midfield and dribbled into the defense and blasted his shot into the upper third of the net.
Hawaii-Hilo found their offensive edge just a minute later when Alejandro Patino's shot from inside the box that was deflected by Cougar goal keeper Tyler Jaramillo but not controlled. Cristian Ruelas corralled the ball from six yards out and deposited it into the open net.
In the 74th minute Jamie Sporcic put a nice left footed blast, after a feed from Adam Colton, at the top of the box. His boot was the third goal of the season and tucked nicely just inside the left post as the Vulcans brought their deficit down to one goal.
Any hopes of a Vulcans (4-11-1, 3-7-1) were put to the wayside when Keenan Armbrust scored in the 87th minute to seal the victory. He cleaned up a deflected shot from his brother Kaleb for his fourth goal of the season.
Azusa Pacific travels to Holy Names and Dominican on Thursday and Friday respectively to close out the season.
