Another Close Call Win

BELMONT, Calif. - Living on the edge has suited the Cougars just fine recently.

Azusa Pacific pulled out their second golden goal win in their last three games at the topped Notre Dame de Namur 3-2 in overtime on Thursday.

The victory comes on the heels of last Thursday's golden goal victory against California Baptist then a last minute regulation goal win five days ago against Fresno Pacific.

"We created a lot of chances and we keep pressuring their defense but just had a hard time breaking through," head coach Jason Surrell said. "I give our team credit for continually battling despite being down twice. We didn't play our best but we found a way to win."

During the contest Azusa Pacific had a handful of tough luck when opportunities that presented themselves couldn't be taken advantage of. Yet, after hitting posts and fortunate saves from the Argonauts goal keeper, the Cougars found a way to come out on top.

Despite holding an 8-3 edge in total shots, with a 4-1 advantage in shots on frame, the Cougars went into halftime knotted at 1-1.

The Argonauts got on the scoreboard first when Marita Gomez scored on a pass from Arianna Cunha. Her shot from the left side went towards the far post and into the back of the cage in the 27 minute.

Katelyn Rogers found the equalizer minutes later when she scored her team high sixth goal of the season. Rogers took a feed from Cara Scammon the made a move at the top of the box before find the left side of the netting.

The home team took a frightful 2-1 lead as Daniela Miramon scored her first goal of the season in the 65th minute

The persistent Cougars tied the contest at 2-2 when Mayra Almazan was able to weave her way through the backline and cracked a shot from the top of the box that tickled the twine.

After regulation the Azusa Pacific dominance was evident from a stat sheet that showed the holding a significant edge in shots (17-5) and shots on goals (8-3).

The contest came to an end in the 97th minute when the Rogers, Almazan combination put together the game winner. Almazan struck a beautiful pass across the net to the waiting Rogers who deposited the ball into the open cage.

Azusa Pacific, playing their first of two trips to the bay area this season, concludes this trip on Saturday with a contest against Academy of Art.

With five games left in the season the Cougars find themselves ranked third in the first of four NCAA west region rankings. The top six teams will qualify for postseason play based on the final rankings which will be revealed on Nov. 9. The second set of rankings will be revealed on the NCAA Championships website on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
