SAN FRANCISCO – As the season comes down the final stretch, Azusa Pacific is hitting its stride.
The Cougars won their sixth straight game with a 2-0 victory against Academy of Art on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Cougars, who came into the contest ranked 23rd in the nation, move to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in league action. After Saturday's league games, Azusa Pacific, Concordia and Point Loma each have a league best seven conference wins.
Azusa Pacific peppered the Urban Knight back line time-and-time to the tune of a season high 32 shots. While the Cougars were whistled for six offsides they were persistent in pressuring the Academy of Art defense. In addition to their total shots, Azusa Pacific put 13 of them on frame.
"We had chances all game long and I thought we played well today. At this point in the season you want to be sharp and playing crisply. Today I thought we did that," head coach Jason Surrell.
After a handful of close calls in which they nearly broke through on the scoreboard, the Cougars converted on an opportunity in the 38th minute when Haley Fisher scored her first goal of the season. She took a nice through ball from Mayra Almazan off a corner kick and beat Urban Knights goal keeper Maggie Alikpala in the lower right corner.
It was the only goal in a first half that saw Azusa Pacific take 15 shots; five of which were on frame.
For second straight game Cara Scammon found the back of the net when her shot from six yard out tickled the twine in the 79th minute. The insurance goal was set-up after Almazan and Haley Williamson teamed up on a pair of beautiful passes to Scammon.
"Cara is playing well right now and I'm pleased with how she is stepping up. She is starting to play like a veteran player and it is great to have her presence coming off the bench," Surrell said.
Sarah Klinkenberg recorded yet another shutout by making three saves. The junior's record in goal this season improves to 7-1.
Azusa Pacific begins their final homestand of the regular season Thursday against BYU-Hawaii at 5 p.m.
