FRESNO, Calif. – Despite not being at full strength the result was what the team was looking for.
Azusa Pacific overcame a first half deficit to defeat Fresno Pacific 2-1 on Saturday evening. It was the first of three straight PacWest road games for the Cougars
"Our legs were heavy tonight and we were shorthanded but good teams find a way to win and that's what we did tonight," Surrell said. "We didn't play our best but we got the win and on the road in conference, that's what matters most."
Although neither team found the back of the net in the early minutes, each squad was able to test the oppositions goal keeper. The Sunbirds broke through on the scoreboard in the 27th minute when Rachelle Schiller scored on a Mariah Montoya corner kick. Schiller controlled the ball in the box and beat Cougar goal keeper Sarah Klinkenberg from five yards out.
In the 59th minute the Cougars got the equalizing goal when Cara Scammon converted a penalty kick.
For the second straight game Stephanie Lossau scored the game winner. After her golden goal 48 hours earlier against California Baptist, she converted on a shot from just outside the box over Fresno Pacific goal keeper Selena Braun in the 89th minute. Allyn Brown assisted on the play.
"She is really coming into her own and she is reading the game in front of her really well," Surrell said of Loussau. "Her physical game has always been there and now her mental side is coming together now. She is believing in herself more."
Azusa Pacific took 10 shots in each half as they posted a 20-11 edge against the home team. The Cougars also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
In front of the cage Sarah Klinkenberg earned the win with a four save effort.
