Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Stephen Hinkel

Point Loma Plays Rueful Hosts

SAN DIEGO – Looking for a spark as the month flipped to October, the Azusa Pacific men's soccer squad couldn't find one on Thursday evening.

Playing the first night game in school history, Point Loma posted a 2-0 victory against the Cougars.

The victory for the Sea Lions was their first against Azusa Pacifc since the 2004 season. The Cougars eight game winning streak a 12 game unbeaten streak against their San Diego foe has been snapped.

"I think we are just going to continually work hard and it won't be one play or one score that's going to change the way things are going right now. We are going to keep after it. I was encouraged with some of the things we did tonight. Point Loma did enough to win it but I thought we did enough to get a couple of goals but it didn't turn our way tonight," head coach Dave Blomquist said.

Azusa Pacific nearly got the first tally when Kaleb Armbrust put a shot on goal in the 22nd minute that beat Point Loma goal keeper Michael Lambert but defender Brady Johnansen came flying over and knocked the ball away before it crossed the goal line.

"Goals change games. And you always want to score first," said Blomquist. "It was a fantastic play on our part to get him the ball but it was a fantastic play by the defender to clear the ball out. It would have changed the game for sure because we would have had a little momentum and confidence but unfortunately it didn't go in."

Moments later in the 25th minute Lewis Grant booted a ball from 20 yards out on the right side that clipped off the right post for the Sea Lions (2-3-1, 1-0-1 PacWest) best chance before their goal. With just over 17 minutes left before the end of the first half, the Cougars tried to clear but couldn't. Manu Montal scored his first goal of the season when he took a right side pass from Nico Tagaloa and converted his shot from inside 10 yards.

The first half came to an end with the Sea Lions holding a one-goal edge with a majority of the game being played in their offensive end. Point Loma held a 9-1 edge in corner kicks while outshooting the Cougars 12-3.

Less than four minutes into the second half Montal scored his second goal of game when he took a centering feed from Daniel ten Bosch.

In the late minutes of the game the Cougars (0-4-2, 0-1-1) had a handful of cracks at the goal but a free kick and then a half volley from Caesar Santos came-up empty. Azusa Pacific also couldn't take advantage of any set pieces from corner kicks.

With just over 60 seconds left Keenan Armbrust nearly broke the Sea Lions shut out but his shot in-close off a Santos feed was saved by Lambert.

Point Loma put together a 17-10 shot advantage – including a 7-3 edge on shots on goal. They also took 10 of the game's 17 corner kicks.

Azusa Pacific hosts PacWest newcomers Concordia (Calif.) on Saturday afternoon for their league home opener.
