AZUSA, Calif. -- The Azusa Pacific men's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2015 season with a 2-0 triumph over Concordia with a pair of first-half goals, separated by less than half of a minute at the Cougar Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon in a Pacific West Conference meeting.
Goalkeeper Tyler Jaramillo earned his first shutout of the season for the Cougars and also played a part in the team's first goal, sending a dropkick passed the Eagle defense. Callum Wallace was the first to get to the ball on the right side of the field and sent a pass on the ground to Kaleb Armbrust inside the box, who shot immediately and gave the Cougars lead in the 27th minute.
An almost identical situation led to the second goal for Azusa Pacific just 28 seconds later. Wallace had the ball in the corner on the right side again and sent a controlled pass to Armbrust, who paused inside the box and elected not to take the shot making the extra pass toCesar Santos on the other side of the box who settled it and blasted it into the goal for a 2-0 lead.
"The goals were an end product of some team football and some good passing," Azusa Pacific head coach David Blomquist said. "They were two quality finishes after some great ball movement and great awareness in the final third. Kaleb showed great unselfishness and willingness to set someone up that is in a better position than him."
Azusa Pacific controlled possession throughout the first half, holding the Eagles to just one shot in the first half and it was not on goal. After surrendering a two-goal lead to the Cougars, Concordia put more pressure on the Cougar defense in the second half with five goals. Two of those goals were off the mark and Jaramillo saved the other three.
"The guys have been working hard and it has not been an easy road," Blomquist said, "but it was a great performance today. One of the keys was that from the beginning we were into it and we were intense and moving the ball well."
Concordia's best opportunity to score came in the 64th minute with three consecutive corner kicks taken, but the Azusa Pacific was first to get a head on the ball all three times, preventing the Eagles from getting a shot off.
Azusa Pacific is now 1-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in PacWest play. The Cougars will next play against Chaminade on Thursday in Azusa, followed by Hawai`i Pacific on Saturday.
"Hopefully this is the start of something," Blomquist said. "The guys are reading to keep moving forward and keep moving well. Now we need to keep this going against Chaminade."
