AZUSA, Calif. -- A brilliant three-point shooting performance helped Azusa Pacific move into a three-way tie for the longest current winning streak in NCAA Division II with 14 straight wins, as the No. 14-ranked Cougars tied a season-high with 13 three-pointers in Monday night's 87-63 win over Academy of Art.
The 14-game winning streak is tied for the sixth-longest in Azusa Pacific men's basketball history, and it ties the Cougars with top-ranked West Liberty and No. 4-ranked Lincoln Memorial for Division II's longest winning streak. It also extended APU's Pacific West Conference winning streak to 14 games dating back to last year, as the Cougars remained unbeaten through eight games of conference play this season while improving to 15-1 overall.
Senior guard Troy Leaf scored a team-high 21 points and drained four-of-six three-pointers, and Azusa Pacific tied a season-high with 13 three-pointers off the fingers of six different shooters. Junior guard Bruce English hit three treys in a 10-point effort to join Leaf in double figures, and senior guard Kevin Stafford added another three long range makes to end up with nine points. As a team, the Cougars shot 53 percent (27-for-51) while hitting at a 50 percent clip (13-for-26) on three-pointers.
The Cougars broke an early 6-6 deadlock with a 19-4 run, scoring the first nine points of the burst while holding Academy of Art scoreless for a stretch lasting more than six minutes. After taking a 33-22 edge into halftime, Azusa Pacific opened the second half on a 10-2 run which included three-pointers from Stafford and English. From that point on, the Urban Knights never got closer than 16 points, and the Cougars led by as many as 31 points.
Academy of Art was led by a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double from the Urban Knights' leading scorer, Alexis Moore, although he scored 16 of his 24 points in the final 11 minutes after Azusa Pacific had already widened its lead to over 20 points. No other player finished with more than three rebounds for the Urban Knights, while eight different Cougars grabbed at least three boards to help Azusa Pacific post a 45-28 edge in total rebounds.
Six players scored at least eight points for Azusa Pacific, which compiled a convincing 42-19 advantage in bench scoring. Freshman Petar Kutlesic finished with nine points and tied junior guard LyDell Cardwell as the team's leading rebounder with eight. Academy of Art was held without a three-pointer in the first half, finishing 35 percent (21-for-60) overall and just 26 percent (six-for-23) on three-pointers in the game.
Up next for Azusa Pacific is a Jan. 17 Saturday night visit to St. George, Utah, to take on Dixie State, which is the only conference program the Cougars have not beaten since joining the PacWest in 2012.
