Box Score AZUSA, Calif. - A quick goal proved to the be the game winner as Cal State Stanislaus recorded a 2-0 win over Azusa Pacific in an early season women's soccer match-up between two of the region's top teams.Â
Each team won their conference's regular season championships last season. Stanislaus carried a national ranking of 11th into Saturday's contest.
Fourteen seconds after Azusa Pacific preformed the opening the kick, Jade Poon corralled a loose ball from Cougar's goalie Sarah Klinkenberg at the top of the box. Poon's theft proved to be the game winner.Â
The remainder of the half statistically went in the home team's favor as Azusa Pacific put five shots on frame while the Warriors had just one other shot on goal.
The Cougars continued to apply pressure inside the box during the second half but couldn't find the equalizing goal. Stanislaus put an insurance goal on the scoreboard in the 76th minute when Kirsten Coleman controlled a pass from Karli Nestler and blasted a shot from 10 yards out into the back of the net.
The two-goal effort by the Warriors ended a streak of seven straight games in which Azusa Pacific has given up just one or no goals.
Despite holding an overall edge in shots (14-6) and corner kicks (3-1) the home team came out on the short end of the stick.Â
Azusa Pacific concludes a stretch of playing three straight teams that went to the NCAA Division II Championships last season on Monday evening. Western Washington travels to the Cougars soccer complex as the third ranked team in the country for a 7 p.m. kick-off.Â
